The site
The Red Wall Residence โ designed by i2a Architects Studio โ stands on a serene landscape adorned with lush vegetation. The site showcases a gentle slope towards its rear. The design takes advantage of the open space, allowing ample natural light and ventilation to flow into the residence.
The brief
The clients wanted the house to be extremely private and not exposed to the street. They also wanted the views of the trees and the landscape to be maximised. The major design concern was to create spaces that lead to a fluid dialogue with nature.
The design intent
The Red Wall Residence is a wonderful paradigm of how modern architecture can harmoniously blend with the tropical environment. The design team focused on highlighting the purity of the form through by incorporating rationalist features like linear planes, volumes and bold colours, which create visuals and spaces that integrate with the siteโs natural features.
This abode seeks to provide a space for retreat and relaxation, while also offering an opportunity to experience various notions of interaction between spaces, and with landscape. Its structure is intended to seamlessly integrate with the natural environment, creating a sense of spaciousness and freshness to anyone experiencing the spaces.
The spatial configuration
The facade of the building is closed from the front with solid walls finished with red natural stone. A wide opening to the side of the building creates a grand entrance for the user. The paved natural stone passage between the landscape and the water body leads to a partially closed sit-out with a large courtyard on the side.
At the lower level is the living room which is open to nature. The double height of this space allows the sensation of amplitude and inside-outside integration. The main courtyard is located on the north side of the living room, while the second courtyard is situated between the living room and the dining, and serves as the gazebo with water features. Each courtyard is distinct in design and has its own role to play. The kitchen is placed in the south-east corner of the house to ensure a smooth flow of wind and light.
The ground floor has three ensuite bedrooms with framed views to the private courtyards and landscapes. On the upper floor are two additional bedrooms with attached washrooms, and a family living area which is privy to the internal courtyards. The study is created as a mezzanine floating volume which can be accessed by taking the main flight of stairs.
The material palette
The team chose a red-toned material palette, comprising of red stone imported from Agra, to allow the building to stand out against its green backdrop. This massive eye catching masterpiece in reddish colour puts the building in a harmonious coexistence with the nature surrounding it. A muted palette indoors contrasts the bright red facade, lending the spaces a bright and welcoming feeling. The interior has a mix of western and Indian (bespoke) contemporary furniture highlighting grey, beige and rustic wood.
