This Mumbai apartment has a warm luxurious vibe

Accentuating shades of grey and an elaborate scheme of raw materials and textures, this Mumbai apartment — designed by Aayush Bagzai Designs — is a unique interpretation of a luxurious urban space.

The brief

Aayush Bagzai Designs’ vision for this 1,100-square-foot Mumbai apartment was a space that channels a striking mix of contemporary design with hues of grey and rustic materials. The owner wanted the firm to craft a grand, unique and distinct style for this apartment — to devise a fresh material and colour palette to blend the world of rawness, grandeur and luxury together — while also having elements never seen before.

The design intent

The core design philosophy for this project was to combine a striking mix of contemporary design and rustic hues. To stay true to the client’s vision of creating something out of the box, The Den was created as a paradoxical space with statement elements. “We were very clear from the beginning to create the space as an exclusive den that compliments the client’s personality and requirement,” says Aayush Bagzai, principal designer, Aayush Bagzai Designs. “This is a very special project for me as I collaborated with my father who has been in the design industry for 20+ years. Mixing his experience with modern and luxury design is the core of the space,” he adds.

The civil intervention

Though this apartment was fairly new when the design team received it… almost all the walls were brought down and spaces were planned rearranged to meet the brief.

The design and material details

The mini lobby which precedes the living room features a marble inlay flooring, and ceiling panels which mirror the same symmetric pattern. The walls illustrate sombre grey tones which pair perfectly with the green-grey console and the mirror which hangs over it. In the luxurious living area each design element is a different shade of grey combined with a contrast of bright and warm materials and artwork.

The leather sofa is accentuated by a majestic textured art piece by artist Anishka Paraswani and a complementing rug by The Weaver. Giving the bachelor pad theme more realism, the father-son duo collaborated with Sonali Singh Rao to design a table that includes watches, dollar notes and gold replicas arranged dramatically. “Our statement epoxy side table is one of the most interesting elements in the living room. We call it the Wasted Table as it translates to being in a drunken state and throwing things around. Just like the concept, we threw things around the table and packed it with clear epoxy resin.” shares Aayush.

The dining space in this apartment is taken over by a luxurious bar which is set against the backdrop of portraits of popular Hollywood actors. The wooden bar with a mango onyx countertop is paired with pure leather bar chairs. The kitchen was designed with back painted glass in a caramel finish and a white quartz countertop. The designers have kept the space simple yet sophisticated with a play of patterned tiles on the backsplash. The powder bathroom of the house sees Armani Grey marble on the walls, and is combined with Travolex, a unique and gorgeous stone that beautifully lightens up the space.

The bedrooms embody a relatively subtle and warm theme with the master bedroom walls designed in champagne gold texture, while a herringbone patterned hardwood is used for the flooring. The duo opted to add an interesting touch of rawness with birch plywood fluted panels travelling from the walls onto the ceiling. The brown leather headboard and a glossy back-painted glass wardrobe with rose gold Versace handles contribute to the understated elegance of this room. The balcony attached to this room incorporates sleeper wood finished in raw effect and deck flooring to give it a rustic, dark look. The master bathroom hosts a larger than life portrait of Marilyn Monroe created with mosaic tiles which further continues into the ceiling with digitally printed ACP Sheets.

The parent’s bedroom is a cohesive blend of minimalist materials. The walls include an offset panelling and a flushed door for the bathroom. The terrazzo side tables complement the terrazzo lamp designed by Harshita Jhamtani Designs making for an interesting element in this subtle and warm space.

The meditation room which doubles up as a guest bedroom when the need arises has a warm and rustic tone which is largely created by sandwiching cane and glass for the multipurpose wall unit. The wall unit opens as a murphy bed in the middle, a mandir unit on the right and storage towards the left. Adding to the mood of the space is a gorgeous gold leaf artwork by Rudranne SA where she re-creates a sense of spirituality through white swans who are known as graceful aquatic birds representing the divine spirit.
