The brief

The client envisioned their 450-sq-ft studio apartment as a sanctuary in a bustling city, where every corner would reflect a thoughtful blend of functionality and elegance. Seeking a design that maintained an airy and inviting atmosphere, they indicated their desire for a cohesive layout that would seamlessly integrate different living areas, ensuring each space serves its purpose efficiently without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. Their home had to illustrate attention to detail, exquisite finishes, creativity and innovation.

The design intent

Embracing the inherent challenges of urban living, the design philosophy prioritises versatility and adaptability. “Flexible furniture arrangements and multifunctional design solutions ensure that the space can effortlessly transition between different activities and accommodate the evolving needs of the client,” points out Ajit Shroff, principal designer, Blend Designs. “From innovative storage solutions to space-saving furniture pieces, every aspect of the design is tailored to enhance convenience and comfort without compromising on style.”

Moreover, The City Nook, as this project is called, embodies a philosophy of understated elegance, where simplicity meets sophistication. Clean lines, muted colour palettes, and timeless materials create enduring appeal, allowing the space to serve as a serene retreat from city life. By prioritising quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, the design philosophy aims to evoke a sense of calm and tranquility, offering a respite from the urban chaos while celebrating the inherent beauty of contemporary living.

The spatial flow

Upon entering, one is welcomed by the expansive view of the living room, featuring a prominent French window that invites ample natural light into the space. To the right of the entrance, seamlessly integrated within the open plan layout, lies the kitchen area alongside a designated dining space. This thoughtful arrangement fosters a sense of connectivity and fluidity between the various functional areas. Notably, the entrance to the sole bedroom of the residence is discreetly positioned within the living area, ensuring a seamless flow throughout the entirety of the home.

The material palette

The compact apartment embodies a fusion of urban sophistication and cultural richness through its meticulous selection of materials. Neutral tones serve as a versatile canvas, allowing the intricate textures and patterns of Indian Bhutta print fabric to shine alongside plush textiles like velvet and linen. These fabrics, adorning furniture and soft furnishings, envelop the space in comfort and elegance, inviting residents to unwind amidst the bustling city ambience. Carefully chosen rugs and drapery further enhance the atmosphere, infusing it with visual interest and softness.

Complementing the fabric palette, brass accents are strategically integrated throughout the apartment, adding touches of refinement and luxury. From a brass planter near the dining area to a brass-framed coffee table in the living space, these elements contribute to an elevated aesthetic. Meanwhile, wood features prominently in key areas, notably the kitchen, where it adds warmth and natural beauty. Used for frames, beading, and partition doors, wood elements create a sense of rustic charm while providing functional cohesion. Each element tells a story, weaving together a tapestry of sophistication and cultural heritage within this home.

The challenges

Designing a small studio apartment presented several challenges that required innovative solutions. Firstly, optimising space was paramount, requiring careful planning to ensure functionality without sacrificing an open, airy atmosphere. Every inch was utilised efficiently to avoid overcrowding while maintaining comfort. Secondly, multi-functionality was crucial, demanding furniture and layout designs that could seamlessly transition between activities like sleeping, working, dining, and entertaining. Adequate storage is essential to keep the apartment clutter-free. Visual expansion was achieved through strategic lighting, mirrors, and reflective surfaces. And lastly, despite the constraints of a small studio apartment, the design team had to ensure that the design reflected the personality and lifestyle of the client.

The highlights

“In our pursuit of maximising the impact of our small space design,” says Ajit, “our focus was on infusing every corner with a sense of drama and appreciation for detail. A standout feature is the brass coffee table, carefully positioned to serve as a luxurious centrepiece, reflecting light and adding sophistication.” Additionally, the incorporation of patterns and blending Indian and Western influences adds depth and visual interest.

Favourite aspect of the project

“One particularly satisfying aspect of this project was the ability to evoke a cohesive and captivating vibe throughout the entire space,” opines the designer. “While it’s challenging to pinpoint a single room or feature as a favourite, the collective ambience created by the amalgamation of all elements truly stands out. This holistic approach to design not only elevated the individual components but also contributed to an overall experience that felt cohesive, inviting, and deeply satisfying.”
