The site

The villa, a 20-year-old property, stands in Hyderabad’s lush green area of Bowenpally.

The brief

The brief was to create a home that would be a beautiful amalgamation of its existing elements — such as the teakwood staircase, teakwood windows and Indian marble — with a modern, art-filled sensibility.

The design intent

“As we had to work with the existing elements of the villa,” say principal architects Anchal Jain and Adesh Jain of Crenovate Designers, “we kept the design scheme minimal with neutral tones and warm teak wood tones and added art in the form of wall murals, wallpapers and personal artworks filling the space with vibrancy and warmth.”

The civil intervention

The major game changer for the home was opening out the existing balcony wall on the first-floor lounge area and creating an open patio with bifold doors inviting natural light all through the day and merging indoors and outdoors.

The spatial configuration

The ground floor comprises the living room at the entry opening into the dining and kitchen area and a guest bedroom. The first floor accommodates the family lounge, a patio, the master bedroom and the kids’ bedroom.

The material palette

The hand-painted mural by Kavya Reddy on the staircase wall and wallpaper from Kalakaari Haath are the major focal points of the living room. Drawing colours from this artwork, the furniture is kept muted with hints of black to highlight and elevate the space. The curved sofa in beige and pair of wooden rattan armchairs in contrasting upholstery accompany a striped marble inlay table and a custom rug from Carpet Kingdom.

The dining area is kept minimal with wall mouldings at dado level and wooden hand-painted wall plates. The circular dining table and wooden chairs with sage upholstery are lit up with beautiful natural light pouring in through the expansive windows. An arched teak wood sliding partition allows the space to transition into a private zone when desired. In the nearby wash area, the vanity counter is clad with subway tiles and is complemented by a rustic stone washbasin.

In the first-floor lounge, the wall towards the balcony was completely demolished to create a beautiful sun-lit patio that creates a beautiful inside-outside feel. A bespoke lounger sofa, a single-seater and a centre table (all from Orange Tree) surround a jute rug from Jaipur Rugs. A Pichhwai from the clients’ personal collection becomes the focal point of this space.

The master bedroom adheres to a rustic theme with limestone texture paint from Asian Paints, rattan PU wardrobes and concentric bed from Bay Window. On the other hand, the kids’ bedroom with its pitched ceiling follows a blue colour scheme and features a custom wallpaper from  House of Ikari.

The challenges

“As this was a complete renovation project the biggest challenge was to use the existing flooring and certain elements of the home and still create a completely different outlook for the space,” states the architect duo, adding that the hand-painted wall mural in the living room and the sunlit family lounge with a patio get their vote as the highlights of this project.
