This 5,000-sq-ft Ahmedabad bungalow integrates art into design and the results are stylishly functional. Materialised by Anand-based Design Salt Studio, the three-storey building fuses traditional Indian architecture with modern nuances. Intricate brackets, cornices and keystones hold the external visage of the building.

The welcoming entrance to the residence had a printed tile flooring and a patterned ceiling. A custom swing floats against yet another art-piece. “The semi-open verandah follows the ideology of a ‘chowk’ in traditional Gujarati households,” says Gopal Patel, who helms Design Salt Studio, the design firm in charge of this assignment.

Crafted as a stylised space, the artsy informal living area features modern furniture with striking highlights of blue incorporated into its design and materiality. The focal point of the room is an arty white rug with a stark blue stroke running across. The formal space comprises a statement chaise, posh armchairs and accent centre tables. Filled with soft sunlight, this room emanates splendour.

Two comfortable yet stylish couches breathe life into the lounging area. The customised rug covers almost the entirety of the space, making it homely and intimate. The flexible illumination and cosy layout makes the room ideal for entertaining.

The drawing room and dining space are divided by a customised graphical jaali, serving as a visual highlight for both the functionalities. The double-height dining room has a formal dining space and a breakfast bar. The room sees a predominance of stone, and the intricate inlaid stone flooring adds to the expressive visual of the room. Gold accents in light fixtures and decor are nothing short of curated art.

The guest room witnesses a simplistic approach in terms of design, with neutral colours, textured walls and veneer-wrapped furniture pieces. A linear geometry runs throughout the space which uplifts its feel and style.

Keeping in mind the habitants of this space, the kids’ room is designed as a quirky and vibrant confluence of graphical elements and minimalistic design. Accents of blue and red are balanced with subdued whites and simplistic geometry of the furniture. The walk-in closet and washroom are an extension of the bedroom, design-wise with red and blue features. The graphically-composed tiling in wet cubicles adds to the overall visual appeal of the space.

The opulent master room sits under a pitched, veneer-finished ceiling and features bespoke wooden furniture with brass accents. Adding to its richness is an exquisite Kesariyaji Green stone-clad bed-back with elegant brass inlay. The ensuite bathroom includes a walk-in closet, and is an artistic expression of veneer, white marble and brass.
