The Fluting House, a 1,200-square-foot 3BHK apartment in Ahmedabad, was refurbished by UA Lab (Urban Architectural Collaborative) and The Design Story to suit the changing needs of a three generational family. The client’s brief requested a semi-contemporary styled functional home. The architects rearranged the spaces to allow sufficient amount of sunlight and wind circulation inside the apartment throughout the day.

In the rearranged floor plan, one lands on a compact porch area before entering the uninterrupted living-dining-kitchen space. The porch accommodates a shoe rack with a small seating. A partition separates the living (with an extended balcony space) from the dining, while the breakfast table placed in the open kitchen acts as a connection between the dining and the kitchen. The partition unit serves dual purpose — it’s a pooja space from the dining side, while a display unit is created towards the living area. The kitchen has an adjoining utility and storage area; and a powder bathroom is placed close to the dining area.

One can access the bedrooms from the dining area. The master bedroom has an attached bathroom, and also makes space for a small library unit and study area, besides the customary wardrobes, bed and dressing unit. The grandparents’ room is compact when compared to the other two bedrooms, and uses minimal furniture. The daughter’s bedroom has a full height wardrobe, study unit and bed. All the bedrooms has attached balconies.

The material palette included the use of wood, fluted glass, brass and veneers; while shades of greys, white and blues formed the colour board. The bespoke furniture pieces keeps functionality at the heart of the design, whilst displaying minute details.
