The site

The Niche Pharm Life Sciences Office Headquarters design seeks to give personality and representativeness to the office. Spreading across 10,000 sq ft, it serves as the central office for a pharmaceutical company located near Dehradun. The space is emphasised through statement furniture pieces, running more than thirty feet in length, mimicking the mountains seen outside and flowing along the rhythm of the undulating ceiling and curvilinear circulation flow.

The spatial flow

“The design sets the framework for a modern and dynamic workplace with the visual axis stretching along the longitudinal length,” state architects Nehit Vij and Devyani Gupta of Intrigue Designs Studio + Lab. Upon entering the space, one is greeted with an animated interior that supports identity and innovation which is in unison with the surrounding view (of the mountains). The space comprises gentle undulating curves, exhibited in the ceiling, furniture, walls interspersed with both informal and formal seating. Taking forth the new work culture, the curvilinear corridor on the right side has flexible meeting booths, formal and informal meeting rooms, conferences, cafeterias, an audit room, etc spread on both sides with complete visual access. The character of the central area flows seamlessly into the 3,000-square-foot director’s lounge comprising the director’s cabin, lounge and a formal conference room.

The highlight

The bespoke furniture items lend much of the identity to the office. Made in wood, the serpentine 30-foot-long curvilinear reception table dominates the space, lending a raw, luxurious feel to the office. The furniture pieces flow organically in tandem with the interiors along the rhythm of the suspended undulating ceiling. Customised for the client by The Vakr Studio, the ceiling and the accent furniture took four months of coordination and execution — and only three hours of onsite installation. “The suspended swooping wooden rafters posed one of the biggest challenges, as the suspension framework resided behind the enclosed ceiling,” discloses the duo.

The material palette

The generous volume created through meticulous spatial planning and carefully selected material palette emphasises the view, and one cannot visually dissociate the exterior from the interior from any standing point. The space in itself is minimalist – clutter-free with muted earthy colours on the curved walls and glass to further accentuate the dynamic elements. Carefully chosen artwork, going well with the design ethos, highlights the space and adds colour to the overall design.
