Photography, for Singh, blossomed from a childhood fancy into a passion — and eventually led to a full-time profession. Studying and practicing architecture allowed him to bring about a synthesis of the two and this reflects not just in his architectural photography but also in the travel work. Singh’s interest in both modern architecture and architectural heritage has resulted in several published books, some under his own imprint Immaterial. The latest of these pays homage to Didi Contractor and her sensitive oeuvre.

“Light reveals shade conceals, and their interaction with surface creates an ever-changing geometry…space envelopes…creates dimension,” he states. “The frame includes and isolates…sometimes analytical at other times intuitive. Through architectural photography, I explore this ephemera.

“My training as an architect has allowed me to look at space, context and detail in a keen experiential manner. For me, photographing architecture and interiors is a two-way process where inherent sensibilities enter into a dialogue with the design philosophy. Visual expression ensues in a manner that sometimes leads to the design intent being captured as is or at other times reinterpreted.”

Joginder Singh commenced professional photography in 2003.
