This Gandhinagar home is an ode to modern Indian aesthetics

Studio Deshi designs a timeless space with a touch of Indian aesthetics in calm and earthy tones.

The brief

Simple, clean and minimal were the prime requirements for this 3-BHK apartment designed by Studio Deshi in Gandhinagar. The design had to cater to the requirements of a three generational family comprising a couple, their mother and child. The clients envisioned a modern house which also remained true to their Indian (Gujarati) roots. The space was a basic 3-BHK shell with an open living, dining and kitchen; and balconies overlooking an open green space from the adjoining private property.

The design intent

“The design blends modern Indian aesthetics with clean functional lines of Scandinavian design in a unique way. Here, materials, colours, textures, form and function come together in the perfect proportion to create a beautiful symphony of calmness,” shares Devanshi Doshi and Shivam Vaidya, principal designers Studio Deshi.  “The house overall follows a very earthy palette — light wood/veneer with a beige backdrop and terracotta highlights surrounded by greens in all balconies. Tranquil Symphony is an ode to the modern Indian aesthetics through simplicity and minimalism,” they add.

The design and material details

An indirect entry to the living room is created by an entrance vestibule with a customised Sri Yantra. The heart of the house is the custom designed two way pivot swing creating two separate zones for the living spaces. The swing creates a subconscious demarcation between the living space and the informal area where the dining, balcony and swing together form an ideal spot for an afternoon soiree. The open kitchen, being quite visible from the living has been designed such that it forms a strong backdrop — a bright coloured wall dado arranged in a chevron pattern contrasting with the otherwise neutral palette.

The living room sees bespoke white oak sofa with a band of cane detailing and comfortable Kangaroo chair. Softness is brought in the space by a simple ceiling curving on both the edges with an indirect glow of light washing the walls and binding all spaces together. The custom designed two-way swing with wooden turning balls, the cane detailing in furniture, the earthy tones of yellow and terracotta with the contrasting greens of the surrounding brings an Indian-ness to otherwise modern interiors. All bedrooms were designed keeping in mind client requirements in very contemporary Indian style with some elements like the turned-wood handles or the cane detailing reminiscent of traditional Gujarati homes.
