This Ahmedabad home honours tradition and embraces modernity

Project Infinite Threads designed by Studio Deshi is a multi-generational family home that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity in a celebration of Indian culture.

The brief

Studio Deshi was invited by a multi-generational family based in Ahmedabad to remodel and renovate their existing home which was spread across 1,450 sq ft. Further, they wanted the home to embrace the essence of the entire family; and encourage connection, and communication.

The design intent

The home effortlessly captures the essence of the three generations who reside in it. The design embodies an India modern style that is visually striking and emotionally evocative. Through a harmonious blend of colours, craftsmanship, and personalisation, it weaves a tapestry of beauty and heritage. It is a sanctuary that honours tradition, embraces modernity, and creates a timeless space for generations to come.

Inspired by vibrant hues found in Indian culture, the colour palette infuses the neutral space with bursts of celebration. Deep terracotta reds, regal marigold yellows, and calming indigo blues pay homage to India’s rich heritage, weaving a thread that connects past, present, and future.

The civil intervention

The space was an existing tenement with a compartmentalized structure, which was opened and extended. The balconies were covered and made a part of the interiors, and the wall between the living and dining was knocked down to create an open floor plan.

The design and material details

Upon entering, one can’t miss the design of the wooden ceiling (that ties the living-dining together) which takes cues from the works of artist SH Raza. The grooves and lines in the wooden ceiling mimic the geometric shapes found in Raza’s artwork, creating a visual continuity that adds a sense of rhythm. In the living room, the sofas are made with traditional finger joint in reclaimed wood, while the centre table features the wood turning and lacquer craft (Kharadi) of Dholka, albeit in local Abu black stone… depicting a beautiful marriage of old craftsmanship and modern aesthetics. It flows to the dining table, where the Ambaji marble inlay reflecting the moon in the night sky, adds to the overall narrative of the space.

A sliding door at the staircase is a lovely fusion of art and functionality — it is adorned with the delicate paper-cutwork art of Lucknow called Sanjhi, which is carefully crafted and encased between two glass panels — which transforms the stairway into a gallery-like passage. Illuminated by natural light, the intricate patterns create captivating interplays of light and shadow, mesmerising all who pass by. The natural elements and motifs of Sanjhi craft was given a beautiful twist by the artists of the Fingerprint Collective.

Each bedroom is carefully curated to embody its users’ unique personalities and desires. The master bedroom offers a serene oasis with soft pastels, inviting relaxation. The common activity room bursts with vibrancy thanks to the bold Athangudi tiled flooring, lively colours, and interactive elements that inspire creativity and imagination. From the timeless elegance of the grandparents’ room to the common spaces that foster togetherness… every room is an intricate symphony of colours and forms woven into a harmonious whole.
