Yellow Door Architects brings the chutzpah of brass and the rawness of wood and cement to create a vibrant Bengaluru home.

Located in Bengaluru, the Apartment 5212 project designed by Yellow Door Architects sees a beautiful fusion of an earthy material palette and luxurious elements. The client commissioned architects Joshua John and Juhi Patel to design a home that reflects warmth with a dash of luxury. The 1,800-square-foot apartment presented the architects an elongated floor plan. The entrance foyer transitions into a corridor which leads to the common spaces. Flanked on either side of the corridor are entry ways to the utility on the left, and the grandmother’s room on the right. The common spaces comprise of the living, dining and kitchen. At the end of apartment is the kid’s bedroom to the left adjacent to which is the master bedroom.
John and Juhi addressed the brief by sticking to one theme throughout the house in terms of the materials and textural palette. The architects wanted to experiment with the versatility of brass, and it has been delicately woven with the warmth of cement or wood — on walls, furniture and lighting fixtures — throughout the apartment. Splashes of vibrancy have been incorporated in the spaces through the accessories, lighting fixtures, artworks, fabrics and fine art prints. “There is a hint of brass in the walls, hanging lights, customised television unit, where brass represents luxury and the earthy cement texture clad walls represent the warmth of the space. We have tried to marry the two elements to provide an outcome that suits the client and for him to be able to call the space his home,” inform the architects.
The corridor is where the design story starts, and it was the most challenging space to design for the architects. “Challenging because it would dictate the mood for the rest of the spaces,” says John. “We wanted it to captivate visitors as soon as they enter the space, and also to create a sense of curiosity as one walks through the corridor,” adds Juhi. On the left, the corridor is flanked with timber slats in a charcoal finish which is complemented by the grey marble flooring. Continuing the mood created with the timber slats, the rest of the walls are treated with a raw cement texture which are adorned at intervals with brass strips.
Complementing the walls is a low lying timber ceiling, which adds warmth and intimacy to the open living, dining and kitchen space. A private dressing nook is created in the master bedroom using the wardrobe as a screen, which also helped in providing a minimal look inside the bedroom. The theme of the house continues behind the carmine headboard with brass strips inlayed in the light timber panelling.
