The site
Purnayan is an Udaipur residence with 9,000 sq ft of built-up area. The plot on which it stands stands on the corner of two major roads measuring 100 ft x 60 ft.
The brief
“This abode was envisioned with a mindful ambition,” discloses Arpit Shrimali, principal, Arthava Architects, the creators of this abode. “It had to be well-versed with Vaastu principles and have an amalgamation of aesthetics and functionality.”
The design intent
The home depicts a “sincere” blend of modernity and traditionalism. While the insides speak of luxe and comfort, there is also a hint of openness and greens.
The spatial configuration
The ground floor and second floor accommodate areas for semi-private gatherings, while the private areas such as bedrooms, library and home theatre are located on the first floor.
The material and colour directions
The exterior elevation has the perfect infusion of whites, grey of concrete and earthy brown of bricks. The luxe of marble and wood adds warmth to the entrance of the house. Playful inlay of diagonal flooring and shades of pastels add wholesomeness to the living room and the bedrooms, with fresh touches of leaf patterns and tropical prints.
The highlights
The two familial spaces — the family room and formal living room — are divided by a partition rendered from fluted glass and wood and the two spaces form a language of their own. The dining area is a spacious double-height volume that receives natural light through the perforations of the jaali. It captures the essence of the space and brings a sense of traditionalism in an overall modern design setting. The central passageway which binds the home together sees a separation of spaces in a very simplistic manner, with semi-private areas in the front and private spaces at the back.
The challenges
The front façade faces a three-storey hospital, which is also the elevation with wide-openings connected to the double-height volume of the dining area. The addition of brick cladding and breeze blocks not only allow for bold visuals, but also create a secondary privacy screen.
