A contemporary Bengaluru home built on a tight plot

Warm materials and a contemporary style rule this Bengaluru home designed by Shilpa Sambargi Architects on a compact plot.

Designed by Shilpa Sambargi Architects for a young couple, this South Bengaluru residential project is spread across 4,000-square-feet, and stands on a tight plot measuring 1,500 sq ft. The client had an elaborate and well-defined brief for his family home: he wanted a separate home for his sister at the ground level apart from a car parking space and a garden. As he lived with his aged parents he wanted four spacious bedrooms — a master bedroom, a grandparents room, a children’s room and a guest bedroom. A modern kitchen, and a free-flowing living dining space was also part of the brief. The design intent informs Shilpa Sambargi, principal architect, “Was to design the space with minimalist approach and a sense of openness with lots of natural light in spite of the tight plot size. We wanted to emphasise on the open plan concept, and minimise the walls as dividers between spaces. This home is a conflux of contemporary style with natural traditional materials.”

As this north-facing site is surrounded by two-storied residences on all sides, the primary design move was to create a well-lit and ventilated structure. This vastu-compliant three-storey building has living and kitchen on the first the first level, while the bedrooms are located a level above that. The main residence at the first floor welcomes with a foyer which leads to a beautiful open living and a double-height dining.

The traditional materials and colour tones used for this project are pleasing and creates a humble space. The living space has window seaters with yellow jaisalmer on the seat, which complements the green kota flooring. The windows have large glass openings on the northern and eastern side which brings in natural light throughout the day adding to the warmth to this home. While all the furniture pieces were tailor-made for the project, the artworks and accessories were locally sourced. The floating staircase with a skylight above it is definitely a highlight of this residence. Structurally it is an 8mm perforated metal folded plate with textured jaisalmer stone as treads.
