The project

Teak Serenity is a 750 sq ft three-bedroom residence in Mumbai, conceived as a calm, material-led home that balances functionality with warmth. The design focuses on understated luxury through thoughtful planning, bespoke teakwood furniture, and a muted, cohesive palette.

The site

Located in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, the apartment sits within a dense urban residential context. It was received as a standard builder-finished flat with clearly demarcated rooms, limited storage, and linear circulation. The existing layout required optimisation to better suit the homeowners’ lifestyle while introducing warmth and character within a compact footprint.

The brief

The clients required a comfortable family home with ample storage, efficient planning, and flexibility for work-from-home needs. Aesthetically, they preferred a timeless interior anchored in natural materials, particularly teakwood, while avoiding visual clutter or excessive ornamentation.

The design intent

The design approach is rooted in restraint, material honesty, and softness. The objective was to create a tactile and calm environment where craftsmanship and texture take precedence over overt décor. Natural teakwood serves as the unifying element, expressed through custom furniture and finishes to ensure cohesion across spaces.

The civil intervention

Selective spatial reconfiguration was undertaken. One bedroom was repurposed into a dining-cum-study area to better align with the family’s routines. Minor civil changes and custom ceiling treatments were introduced to enhance spatial flow and visual continuity.

The spatial flow

The home opens into a warm living area that transitions into a linear passage connecting common and private zones. The dining-cum-study functions as a semi-private space, while the bedrooms are positioned for privacy. Curved ceiling elements and layered lighting soften the circulation spine, reducing the rigidity of the corridor and creating a more fluid spatial experience.

The material palette

The living room is anchored by a bespoke solid teakwood console that doubles as storage and a focal element. A built-in window seating ledge serves as a reading nook while drawing in natural light. Textured wall finishes in warm muted tones add depth without overwhelming the compact volume.

The kitchen follows a parallel counter layout prioritising efficiency and ergonomics. Teak-finish laminate cabinetry is paired with contrasting countertops and dado tiles selected for durability and visual continuity. The passage is articulated through curved POP and gypsum ceiling details, introducing movement and softness. Pendant lights add rhythm and intimacy to this connecting zone.

The dining-cum-study, originally a bedroom, is separated by a textured glass sliding partition that allows light transfer while maintaining subtle zoning. A custom solid teakwood dining table seats four. The study table integrates a sloping multifunctional surface that can double as seating or a resting ledge.

The parents’ bedroom adopts a soft white palette layered with tactile finishes. A woven textured wallpaper introduces depth, while curved wardrobe detailing echoes the home’s overarching language of softness. The master bedroom, though compact, accommodates a dresser, study area, and full-height wardrobe. Short fluted wardrobe panels introduce subtle texture while maintaining composure.

The highlights

The extensive use of bespoke teakwood furniture creates a consistent design identity across the residence. The repurposing of a bedroom into a flexible dining and study area enhances usability within the compact footprint. Curved ceiling details soften circulation, while multifunctional custom furniture responds directly to the realities of urban living.

The challenges

Working within a limited carpet area required careful planning to balance storage, openness, and daily functionality. Integrating multiple functions without overcrowding the interior demanded precision in layout and detailing.

The takeaway

Teak Serenity demonstrates how disciplined material selection and spatial optimisation can transform a compact urban apartment into a cohesive and warm family home.
