The project

Sukoon is a 1,050 sq ft residence in New Ranip, Ahmedabad, designed for a young couple, their child, and their parents. Conceived as a home that prioritises ease and emotional comfort over visual drama, the project reflects a quiet, people-first approach to residential design. Rather than relying on strong contrasts or statement elements, the interiors are shaped through balance—between shared and private spaces, functionality and warmth, simplicity and softness.

The site

The apartment is located within a residential building and was received as a standard developer-finished shell, with fixed room sizes, basic finishes, and a compact kitchen–dining layout. While the overall envelope remained unchanged, the planning demanded careful optimisation to accommodate the family’s needs without compromising openness. The challenge lay in making the home feel generous and connected within a constrained footprint.

The brief

The brief centred on creating a home that felt warm, cosy, and easy to live in. Functionally, the clients wanted clearly defined yet visually connected common spaces, along with a practical dining solution that responded to limited square footage. Aesthetically, the preference leaned towards soft colours, minimal detailing, rounded forms, and a calm atmosphere—steering away from bold or statement-driven interiors in favour of spaces that feel welcoming and lived-in.

The design intent

The design intent was to create interiors that feel relaxed and emotionally comforting, shaped by everyday routines rather than formal gestures. Gentle curves, clean lines, and a muted palette form the foundation of the home’s language, allowing warmth to emerge quietly through material choice and proportion. As the designers explain, the focus was on designing a home that feels calm and lived-in—where comfort, simplicity, and functionality come together without visual noise.

The civil intervention

There were no major structural changes to the apartment. The most significant intervention involved removing the wall of the existing store room to open up the kitchen, making it feel brighter and more connected to the living space. A kitchen island was introduced in place of a conventional dining table, improving circulation and allowing the kitchen and dining functions to coexist efficiently within the compact layout.

The spatial flow

The home unfolds in a clear and comfortable sequence. The entry leads directly into the living room, which acts as the primary shared space for the family. From here, the layout flows seamlessly into the kitchen, visually connected through the island counter that doubles as a dining surface. Private spaces—including the master bedroom and the parents’ bedroom—are positioned to offer privacy while maintaining a consistent design language across the home. The result is a layout that feels intuitive, connected, and easy to navigate.

The material palette

A cohesive and restrained material palette anchors the interiors. Soft neutral tones form the base across walls and cabinetry, creating a calm backdrop for daily life. Rounded edges and arched details soften transitions between spaces, while warm wood finishes and fabric-textured surfaces add depth without heaviness. Patterned tiles in the kitchen introduce character in a controlled manner, ensuring visual interest without disrupting the overall sense of calm.

The highlights

The kitchen island that replaces a traditional dining table stands out as a key spatial solution, addressing a functional constraint with clarity and elegance. The consistent use of soft arches and rounded furniture edges contributes to the home’s welcoming atmosphere, while custom-designed furniture throughout ensures that storage, seating, and circulation are resolved thoughtfully within the compact footprint.

The takeaway

Sukoon reinforces the value of designing with restraint and empathy. By prioritising comfort, clarity, and gentle spatial transitions, the project demonstrates how even modestly sized homes can feel generous, grounded, and deeply supportive of everyday family life.
