The project
Project Ādya is envisioned as a residence where tradition and modernity co-exist in seamless harmony. The design narrative reimagines a finished villa into a home that celebrates the warmth of natural materials and handcrafted details while embracing contemporary comfort and calm.
The site
Located in Chennai, the site was a finished villa handed over as a bare shell. With neutral walls and standard flooring, it offered an open canvas for reinterpreting interiors through natural materials, custom details, and abundant indoor planting.

The brief
The client wanted a calm, earthy home—one that feels rooted in nature yet functions effortlessly for everyday living. The design had to balance storage and openness, softness and simplicity, while maintaining an aesthetic of subtle luxury.
The design intent
Led by principal architects Deepthi Balasubramanian and Vasanth of Concept-D Architects, the design philosophy centres on earthy minimalism—a balance of muted palettes, tactile surfaces, and greenery. “Our intent was to create a home that radiates warmth and balance while remaining refreshingly simple,” says Balasubramanian. Every corner is curated to feel intimate, personal, and timeless.

The spatial flow
The planning ensures intuitive flow while maintaining openness and gentle zoning. The living room sets the tone with its warm furniture, wooden accents, and sense of repose. A handcrafted screen introduces definition without obstructing continuity, creating subtle division while preserving spatial unity.
Furniture placement and orientation are carefully composed to optimise comfort, daylight, and cross-ventilation. Instead of visual clutter, the design focuses on open volumes accented by material rhythm and curated detail.

The material palette
Earthy textures form the foundation of Ādya’s interiors. Wooden rafters stretch across the ceiling, adding rhythm and warmth, while muted walls become a calm backdrop that amplifies the play of natural light. A consistent palette of wood, rattan, and soft tones lends timelessness to the interiors.
The tactile quality of materials defines the experience: the smooth texture of lime-washed walls, the grain of timber, and the handmade beading on the feature wall all heighten sensory richness. Rattan inlays, earthy upholstery, and handcrafted finishes reinforce the home’s natural soul, while decorative elements are minimal and purposeful.
The challenges
Working within an existing shell meant civil changes were limited. The challenge lay in infusing identity and function without structural alteration—a goal achieved through detailing, finishes, and layered materiality.

The highlights
The textured wall backdrop behind the TV unit, framed by delicate beading, adds depth and craft to the living space. Wooden rafters, rattan details, and a palette of soft neutrals come together to create an environment that feels grounded yet refined.

The takeaway
For Concept-D Architects, Project Ādya embodies the power of restraint. By fusing craft, nature, and calm proportion, the studio created a home that finds luxury not in excess, but in essence.
