Project commissioning and background
Design Studio was entrusted with the renovation of Dakshin, a landmark restaurant in Visakhapatnam, following their successful transformation of the 100-room Welcome Hotel Grand Bay, an ITC property. This long-standing partnership paved the way for the revitalization of Dakshin, one of the region’s most iconic dining destinations.
First impressions and initial concept
Upon initial visit, Dakshin’s stature as a city institution was evident. The challenge lay in modernizing the space while preserving its essence. The designers aimed to elevate Dakshin to surpass the standards of other ITC Dakshin restaurants, embodying South Indian hospitality and elegance.
Design brief and concept
The open-ended brief allowed the designers to reinvent the space with art and colour. Their intent focused on infusing a plush South Indian vibe into the 1,200-square-foot restaurant. Rustic tiles with floral inserts replaced the worn carpet, balancing aesthetics and practicality while enhancing acoustics.
Challenges and civil changes
Renovating an established restaurant presented unexpected challenges, including outdated systems and structural surprises. Adaptive planning ensured the tight three-month deadline was met.
Space division and special features
Dakshin’s footprint was optimised for intimacy and capacity. Pillars were repurposed as private dining areas. A mural at the entrance showcases South India’s history, setting the tone for the dining experience. A live appam station and buffet area enhance the culinary experience.
Furniture and materials
Existing teak wood furniture was up-cycled through repolishing, distressing, gold-leafing, and reupholstering. This sustainable approach extended to restoring brass chandeliers.
Lighting and decor
Strategic lighting highlights every table and key decor elements, including brass chandeliers, wallpapers, and sculptures. Elegant additions include Sabyasachi wallpaper, ‘kothi’ candelabras, and gold leaf-edged ceilings.
