The site

This 1,650-sq-ft apartment is located near College Road, Nashik. It enjoys a quiet location in a peaceful lane near a vibrant area with charming cafes, lively movie theatres, and a bustling shopping complex.

The brief

“The family, a couple and their sons, specified a home exuding comfort and spaciousness, tailored to their interests and consciously avoiding market trends,” say architects Sagar Lohar and Saniya Jejani of Ladlab, who were entrusted with the task of scripting an immersive environment.

The design intent

The idea was to sculpt the space into a warm family home layered in different textures and materials. Considerable replanning was involved in creating an expansive layout, focussing on opening up areas, drawing natural light and views, and maximising storage.

The civil intervention

Existing columns and beams were concealed with soft arched portals that define the living and lounge area. The original layout had four tiny bedrooms and an excess of balconies (four in total), along with a terrace. One bedroom made way for larger bedrooms and a spacious dining area. The smaller balconies were enclosed and converted into full-length wardrobes, giving the bedrooms an airy feel. Passages and windows were widened to encourage cross-ventilation.

The spatial configuration

Arched portals mirror each other, delineating the distinct living and lounge areas.  Adjacent to the kitchen, the dining area seamlessly extends from the living space, mirroring its calming, greige hues. The primary bedroom was transformed into a suite overlooking a garden and swing by taking down one wall separating it from the terrace.

The material and colour palettes

A custom designed sectional sofa and the curved lounge seating in soft shades of olive green and grey complement a textured grey rug in the living room. A media unit in a warm veneer further warms the space. Light filters through the sheer curtains, accentuating the textured backdrop. It is minimally decorated with accents from Chor Bazaar. Sitting atop a fluted teakwood base, a round dining table with a marble top is illuminated by a pendant light. The dining chairs continue the olive-green hues from the living room.

The kitchen backsplash features small blue glossy tiles. The overhead and under-counter cabinets have plain shutters in a dusty pink matt finish. White accents are used throughout the space, including a white countertop and floating shelves made of artificial marble.

The master bedroom, connected to a lush terrace, features a calming colour scheme accentuated by white bedding and a grey upholstered headboard with embedded matt brass wall lights. The wardrobes have a matt white PU finish that matches the white colour scheme.

The guest room is designed with light veneer, laminate, and wooden handles, the monotone wardrobe shutters in the guest bedroom seamlessly blend with a beige-toned wall.

A floating nightstand extends from the curved blue headboard in the children’s bedroom, creating a unique focal point. The desk and cabinetry matched the light oak veneer flooring. A powder blue wall and warm white grills concealing an air conditioner present a pleasing contrast. The wardrobes painted in a matt grey PU are designed in continuance to the study area.
