The site

Designed by Usine Studio, the L 23 project is a 7,000-square-foot bungalow in Vadodara which sees a harmonious blend of dynamic volumes, materials, textures, and aesthetics.  The bungalow is laid out in an inverted L form and is a careful balance between the ideals of vastu shastra and the client’s lifestyle. The northeast zone is kept open (for landscaping) to add privacy, and allow soft sunlight into the house during the day.

The brief

The brief required the designers to provide connectivity between all the internal areas and finely manicured outdoors. Aesthetically, the client wanted a warm, earthy and welcoming home with personalised private areas.

The design intent

The design intent was to create a minimal yet warm space with pockets of dramatic pauses across the bungalow. “Drawing from the client’s brief, we worked on the lines of minimal and crisp design. Ever since the inception of the project, our aim was to deliver a space that is an archetype of understated luxury,” inform Yatin Kavaiya and Jiten Tosar, principal designers, Usine Studio.

The design and material details

The bungalow is laid out in a L-form with a grid patterned landscaping layout that visually connects the outdoors with all the internal areas. Additionally, the different areas of the bungalow visually and physically opens into the family are , which extends from the vertex of the L-form.

Upon entering one is welcomed by a striking sculpture by Ashish Das at the foyer which separates the formal living space from the rest of the house. Here, the placement of sculpture within the chiselled exposed brick walls with a skylight above was consciously done to add a drama of textures and sciagraphy. The living room interiors are treated with muted tones and beautified with remarkable works of art and accessories which were handpicked keeping in mind the design flow. However, the sight of the entire landscape through floor-to-ceiling windows is nothing less than picturesque.

The hallway from the foyer opens up into the double-height family room. An exquisite staircase aptly placed here connects the ground to the two floors above it. The family room, kitchen, and dining area are bound together by open planning. The subtleness of the kitchen is balanced by striking elements in the dining area like the live edge top, vintage lamps, and a couplet of abstract art pieces by Siddharth Kerkar.

Each family member’s bedroom reflects their unique taste while maintaining a minimalistic approach. The master bedroom exemplifies elegance, while the bedrooms for the son and daughter showcase edgy and bohemian styles, respectively. Thoughtful attention to aesthetics extends to bath and dressing areas, creating a cohesive blend that satisfies everyone’s needs. The powder Bathroom is conceptualised to be an elegant pocket with intricate inlay in flooring, an exquisite mirror, and a vanity unit, set against the subtle grey canvas.
