The site
The 1,500-sq-ft apartment was a blank canvas, ready to receive client’s requirements and design expectations.
The brief
The well-travelled client had a marked preference for London architecture and design such as their attractive entrances. “That’s how we started off,” says architect Minal Vichare, principal, Mcasa Studio. “We incorporated subtle cues of European style in the house along with modern functionality. We were very clear about one thing: preserve the sense of understated luxury.”
The civil intervention
The architect completely changed the original kitchen area and shifted to the living area. This was one of the requirements.

The spatial flow
The entrance foyer is followed by the living area seating along with an open kitchen. Right next to this lies the six-seater dining table. To the left side of the entrance is a bar section, and just next to it is a walk- in wardrobe incorporating the mandir. Out of the apartment’s three bedrooms, one (with an ensuite bath-tub area) and a study room lie on one side. A guest room and the second master bedroom lie on the opposite side.

The material palette
The home features a melange of upscale materials. The living room has handpicked boucle fabric in a soothing shade of grey to evoke a sense of cosiness and warmth. The kitchen counters are clad in white quartz with Statuario marble on the dado area. The all-marble breakfast counter features a fluted half-round base that creates a visual statement. The bath-tub area uses pencil tiles in a shade of ocean blue, along with terrazzo tiles.
The challenges
Coordinating with a busy client was the main challenge, says the architect “However, we did manage to involve him in all decisions and material selections,” she adds.

The highlights
The open kitchen area with its exquisite marble cladding and the half-round fluted column-base of the breakfast counter as well as the ornamental detailing of the TV and dining walls are some of the special features of this design.
