The brief

Interior designers Vidhi R Nair and Ratish V Raj, founders of VRCS Interiors, has refurbished a 2,100-square-foot apartment in Mumbai addressing the client’s three simple requirements. The family of four wanted the designers to optimise the space, build ample storage spaces, and create an aesthetic which every member of the family would be comfortable with.

The renovation

The space was originally designed by its previous owners 10 years back, hence all the furniture was outdated and the colour scheme was monotonous across the apartment. The space was full of teak veneer panelling and had a basic beige marble flooring throughout. Civil changes in terms of change of flooring, wall alterations and bathrooms with kitchen revamps were carried out. Besides this, the previous home owners had done away with a bathroom to create a walk-in, which the designers reinstated.

The design intent

The intent for the house was to keep the materials simple and yet create a wow factor with colours and textures. Furniture was to play a key role in the same. The clients were very keen on using some exquisite marbles for wall backdrops in the two main bedrooms. The living room and the temple were a priority in terms of spatial planning and aesthetics.

The design and material details

One enters the apartment through the main door which features a luxe gold metallic PU finish, bold black metal inlay details and a soft grill detail. The door frame is a scooped out arched detail which is also finished in a metallic gold PU finish. The panels on both sides are done in matte polished sycamore veneer in a patterned groove detail. Around this, a micro-concrete finished wall with grooves and metal inlays enhance the door and the blue shoe cabinet. The stylish shelf detail is an eye-catching piece along with the nameplate jutting out in gold metal finish. A touch of gold rim is added on the ceiling as well to bring the design together.

Upon entering, one steps on a mushroom toned Italian marble flooring which is spread across the apartment. On the left is a long shoe unit with a seating niche. This storage wall is designed with elegant mouldings and micro concrete in paint. The stripes on the seating ledge and the wallpaper behind on the niche have been matched to replicate the flooring of the study room which lies across this space. The foyer leads you to the study which has a monochromatic striped flooring and ceiling. On one side is a grand bookshelf finished with a teak veneer and matte polish, while the other wall has a full size wardrobe in the same veneer finish with subtle metal inlay rims.

The living room has both formal and informal seating zones. The formal living seating is set against a dramatic panel which is centralised by a circular custom textured wallpaper detail along with mouldings finished in micro-concrete and paint. On this circular ceiling sits the gorgeous chandelier. The carpet is customised keeping in mind the furniture and the colour combination of the space. The informal seating area has a couch which can transform into a daybed; a wall panelled with intricate mouldings and grooves; a wall hung TV unit; and a custom shaped carpet.

The dining table has a combination of black marque and statuario marble as its top, with a beautiful asymmetrical leg detail finished in leather and metal on one side and statuario marble and metal on the other. The chairs are a stunning amalgamation of suede and boucle fabric along with sturdy wooden and metal detailed legs. This bespoke collection has a backdrop of grey oak veneer and micro-concrete along with hints of black metal inlay. The asymmetrical scooped out frame detail finished with an artistic textured look has a hint of indirect lighting to highlight a hand-painted piece of circular art.

On the opposite side of the living area is the mid-sized wall hung irregularly-shaped crockery unit with an artistic shaped facade finished in textured PU. Opposite to this unit is the temple, which is flanked by cabinets that can accommodate pooja items and religious books. The back wall of the temple is finished in antique gold textured paint with circular moulding details, and a flower petal panel detail with indirect lighting to highlight the temple. This also has a sliding folding shutter that gives it an enclosure when required.

The master bedroom has a variant of the St Laurent marble with a symmetrical concrete finished panel detail on both sides. The wall brackets create a little asymmetry adding a detail to the panel. The bed is finished in coloured PU, and the headboard is customised with a stitch detail in a similar colour leatherette. The chaise lounge at the foot of the bed is a complementing rugged patterned piece with a subtle metal base. The lengthy sliding wardrobe is finished in a coloured PU with grooves and rose gold mirror detail. The study corner of the room has a panel of teak veneer strips stained in black along with a black marquee looking laminate for the drawers and a hand textured finished storage unit at the side.

The younger daughter’s bedroom is a studio-like setup to keep the vibe hip and subtle. Colours played in the room are subtle and to the choice of the teenager’s liking. The peachy concrete finished back wall of the bed with irregular grooves gives the space a grunge yet chic feel. The sleek circular side table complements the circular headboard of the platform bed. The study is a snug fit in the niche created at the time of planning which overlooks the lush greens of nearby forest. The attached bathroom is also a reflection of the room. The monochrome chevron patterned flooring with black border around gives the bathroom a chic vibe. The bathroom also has grey marble looking vitrified tiles along with mint green highlighter tiles behind the basin. The irregular shape of the basin also reflects on the custom mirror.

The parent’s bedroom has a rare white base with black veins Italian marble at the back of the bed with an elegant shaped panel detail that reflects in the ceiling as well. This panel has a gold rimmed detail on both the wall and the ceiling with indirect lighting to highlight the marble. The burgundy and white colour combination of the room was a big hit with the parents. The bed and side tables are finished in colour PU and the headboard in a matching colour leatherette.

The elder daughter’s bedroom is a fusion of elegance with a touch of modern. The two poster bed is created in a modern way with a cobalt blue colour Pu finish along with the bed back wall with a detailed panel finished in paint with a textured wallpaper on top. The sliding wardrobe has a louvered detail on the shutters with a complimenting colour PU finish. The console opposite to the bed is a quirky and asymmetric piece finished in antique gold metallic Pu. The ceiling has a simple yet elegant moulding detail running throughout the room.
