The site
The project is located in New Alipore, Kolkata. The design team got the 4BHK site as a bare shell.
The brief
“The clients wanted lots of natural light and clutter-free open space,” says Sakshi Arora Poddar, principal designer, Tatvam Concepts. “They wanted minimal storage and a contemporary look while fulfilling the functional needs of running a house.”
The civil intervention
The kitchen wall was taken down to make the space look bigger. Similarly, the wall between the walk-in wardrobe and bathroom of the master bedroom wall was demolished to fulfil client requirements adequately.

The design and material details of each room
The living room exudes a sense of refined charm, enhanced by its tasteful arrangement of furniture and captivating details — such as the elegant piano gracefully positioned on the right side of the entrance. A comfortable blue sofa and a statement armchair invite you to relax and unwind in style. Nestled nearby, a magnificent marble fireplace emanates warmth and sophistication. Above, an arch with a sturdy metal structure and beautiful veneer stands as a striking architectural feature, adding a touch of contemporary elegance.
The foyer mirror, strategically placed, creates an illusion of depth and amplifies the room’s spaciousness. Its reflective surface beautifully captures the play of light and highlights the surrounding decor.

Moving towards the dining area, a rustic red dining table and chairs complement the overall aesthetic of the living space. The vibrant colour adds a touch of warmth and vitality, creating a harmonious connection between the two areas. The dining area and kitchen are separated by a clever synchronised sliding partition. This innovative design fosters a sense of openness, allowing for both privacy and easy interaction between the kitchen and dining areas. The doors leading to the bedrooms are adorned with open grain blue-tainted veneers, adding a touch of sophistication to the interior design.
The master bedroom is a luxurious and well-designed space. The stone panel and veneer wall add a touch of natural beauty and texture to the room, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The presence of a burgundy leather sofa enhances the richness of the decor, providing a comfortable spot for relaxation. Underneath the sofa, the custom-made pleated rug adds a layer of elegance and visual interest to the flooring. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the master bedroom allow plenty of natural light to enter the room, creating a bright and cheerful ambiance during the day. Offering flexibility, a sliding partition opens up the area and connects it to the airy and refreshing bathroom.

The parents’ room is a serene and tranquil retreat. The calm and neutral vibe creates a soothing ambiance, making it an ideal space for relaxation and rest. The moulding walls overlapping the beautiful marble behind the bed headboard add an elegant and sophisticated touch to the room, creating a focal point that draws attention. The presence of a beautiful mural on the TV wall enhances the room’s visual appeal and adds an artistic element to the decor. The two armchairs in a pop of orange inject a lively burst of colour into the room, creating a pleasing contrast against the calm backdrop. With large windows, the room is filled with natural light, which further contributes to the serene atmosphere and makes the room feel bright and airy during the day.

The guest room blends modern elements with an earthy and inviting feel. The bed with its carvings and cane work exudes old-world charm, adding a touch of nostalgia and elegance. The striking blue wardrobes with cane work create a bold and unique focal point, adding a touch of creativity and craftsmanship to the room. The blue colour of the wardrobes complements the maroon colour of the study wall, creating a harmonious and visually appealing contrast. The study area is tastefully designed with teak wood shelves and a solid wood study table, giving a sense of warmth and sophistication. The addition of green plants brings a refreshing touch of nature indoors, adding life and vibrancy to the room.

The minimalistic approach in the kids’ room allows for ample space to play and explore, encouraging creativity and imagination. The Parisian-themed wallpaper with neutral and pastel colours creates a soothing and timeless ambience, making it a space that the kids will continue to enjoy as they grow. The bed in the shape of a hut and cloud details on the ceiling are playful and whimsical, while the soft pink curtains add a gentle and warm touch to the space.

The balcony acts like a wonderful and inviting oasis in the midst of the city. The plants placed strategically behind the sofa not only add privacy but also bring life and greenery to the space. The turf floor adds a unique touch, giving a sense of being grounded and connected to nature, despite being above ground level. The triple-height ceiling enhances the feeling of openness, providing clear views of the skies and creating a terrace-like experience.
