The brief

“A spacious home, free movement, subtle and peaceful environment with lots of storage, yet not making it feel heavy.” This was the brief given to Anita Taluja and Ambar Sharma whose design firms, The Architects’ Guild and Eclectic Design Studio, collaborated to create an immersive, breezy home from a 2,000-sq-ft apartment in Gurgaon.

The design intent

“The intent was to create the interiors in muted tones with a pop of teak wood to enhance the uniformity in colour throughout the house,” discloses the designer duo. They made sure that the narrative included smartly-placed storage units which did not protrude anywhere abruptly to create a smooth, seamless feel.

The spatial configuration

The spacious programme starts with an entrance foyer, and segues into a living room, a dining area and the kitchen forming the public zone and three bedrooms with ensures and balconies forming the private zone.

The material palette

The selection includes teakwood (polished in clear PU matte) for warmth, balanced with mirrored panelling, black aluminium profiles and glass (fluted and brown tinted). All headboards are upholstered.

The challenges

“With restrictions on changing the civil structure, spaces were designed in a way that the small rooms catered to the big storage requirements and yet do not feel too overwhelming,” reveal Ankita and Ambar.

The highlights

“Our design achieved a perfect balance of proportions while maximising the utilisation of space while meeting the clients’ requirements,” state the designers. “It is a combination of a spacious and breezy ambience, neutral tones and pops of teak wood.” The two designers vote for end-to-end wardrobe, the foldable study and the king-size bed of the master bedroom; the highlights of teak and gentle pink of the kid’s room; and the grooved walls of the foyer passage as the highlights of the project.

The takeaway

Every project teaches its creator something. What lesson did the duo learn from this assignment? “Minimalism is not a lack of something, but a perfect amount of everything!”
