The interiors of this Ahmedabad home, scripted by Design on Mind, juxtapose the simplicity of the present with the charm of the past. And the beautiful synergy leaves room for the changes that may be brought in by the future. “The basic requirement for the homeowners was a spacious living cum dining and kitchen area, daughter and son’s bedrooms, a chic master bedroom, a guest bedroom, and a home theatre,” says Alpesh Parmar of Design on Mind.

The entire house boasts of a contemporary minimal interior design adorned with classic elements. Hues of cream, ivory, white, and other pastel colours on the majority of walls and ceilings enhance the spaciousness, teamed with an iterative accent in the form of a primary colour or a striking pattern. The flooring of the house largely remains white, exceptions being the wooden flooring in two bedrooms and the dining cum living area.
The entrance vestibule with a timeless chess marble floor and a vaulted ceiling features a walnut shoe rack and a sleek console in brushed brass. A partition screen with a walnut frame, fluted glass, and mild steel bars, whose graphic articulation mirrors the chessboard flooring, separates the vestibule and living area.

The large dining cum living area is enriched with walnut hues, cane mesh, floral prints, accents in red, and the eccentric application of metal. The personality of this area is further enhanced by a velvet chesterfield sofa, a leather trunk coffee table, a Pichwai painting, and vintage-themed decor pieces. It opens into a long balcony with minimal modern furniture and plants.
The existing kitchen was made wider by including a neighbouring store room, and made into an open cooking space. A mini breakfast nook adds to the intimacy of the space while also creating a partial physical separation between the kitchen and the formal spaces.
The home theatre design takes you back in time with the use of wooden panelling, velvet fabric, gold accents, and bright colours. Another timeless space is the primary bedroom with its design enhanced with the application of printed fabrics, primary colours, chair rail wooden panelling on walls, and the classic chesterfield bed back design. The bed’s back wall is adorned with beautiful Barahmasa paintings, lending the space a distinct character of its own.

The pooja space opposite the primary bedroom provides the visual experience of a neat aesthetic in sevan wood with minimal embellishments and white. Next to the primary bedroom, are the daughter and son’s bedrooms, separated from the other areas to offer a semblance of independence to the young members of the family. The daughter’s bedroom is a lively space with solid surfaces and patterns in soft pastel colours which introduce a sense of femininity into the space. The son’s bedroom on the other hand is an unapologetically modern design in blues, greys, and oak wood with pops of orange and black.
Small gestures, such as the use of wood and other natural accents add a pleasing warmth to the personality of the house. Deftly balancing spaciousness and minimalism, this home is a good example of combining the contemporary and the classic.
