When clients have a clear and precise thought process, designing their space is smooth sailing… believes Sheetal Agrawal, principal designer, The Canvas Project. The designer is referring to the studio’s latest work on an 800-square-foot 2BHK apartment in Pune where the homeowner wanted the space doused in neutrals, with a touch of the Nordic-Scandinavian decor style. Originally, the apartment was bright and airy but with a closed kitchen — it was broken down to a bare shell and redesigned completely to maintain a cohesive design language. The civil intervention to the kitchen involved scrapping it off completely along with the partition wall; the result was a space filled with natural light, and the provision for a sleek breakfast table.

The apartment doors open to a space with a free-flowing layout — a large living room with an attached balcony on one side, and an open kitchen with a breakfast counter on the other. The highlight of this open space is the decorative fireplace mantel, a requirement from the client, created opposite the living area seating. The children’s room is designed as a nursery room, with a splash of peach and customised wallpaper. Master bedroom is all about coherence of the space with a neutral white theme.

The beauty of this project is the colour scheme devised by the studio where white is married with its many variants, creating a calmness to the entire house. Further, a fluted glass partition was added between the living and kitchen to allow natural light to flood in and give a modern minimalistic touch to the apartment. This monochromatic palette is complemented by teak a striking array of artwork. An element of surprise was conceptualised for all the areas of the house, to create curiosity and interest: like the fire place and false ceiling rafters in living room, a convertible study table in master bedroom, and the extendable bed and customised polar bear wallpaper in children’s room.
