The brief

P&D Associates was approached by a three generational family in Bharuch to design their home, a 7,150-square-foot space, which was enclosed on three sides and faced the main road from the front. The brief required Devang Patel and Pratik Siddhpura, principal designers, P&D Associates to create an open and spacious five bedroom house with an intimate setting within. The clients also wanted their home to be bright, albeit with simple colours and tones.

The design intent

Devang and Pratik decided on an unusual colour palette of complex shades and materials, while the style features were heavily inspired by two forms — Scandinavian minimalistic and Art Deco. “Each space has its own sense of character but one will find few minute details running similar in each space be the floral pattern which is used in versatile form in each space, or our love for designer Italian marble. Such elements binds the design together and we had lot of fun finding the correct tapestry and Italian marble for each space” explain the designers.

The design and material details

As per site area and the family’s need for intimate outdoor space, an elaborate l-shaped deck has been created in the ground floor overlooking the backyard garden space. This garden is used for intimate family gathering while at the front a patio is laid in black with green marble detailing. The double-height 24ft tall entrance porch features a beautiful painting with a veneer console lying under a huge antique modern lantern light. This antique modern light overlooks the entrance and the puja area of the house. There is a white wall partition with arched window jail laid in Scandinavian minimalistic fashion. The puja space features a 7mt high wall with numerous frames highlighted with gods and goddess name in Sanskrit, making it a spectacular accent wall laid in monochromatic black and whites.

A colour palette of blue, white and black tones wrap the family seating area. The ground floor houses two bedrooms, a huge dining space for eight which opens to a deck adjoining the backyard. The colour theme here is kept neutral, and a bespoke dining table in antique wood finish is held together with chairs in black with cane detailing. The highlight of the dining area is the illustration from Derrick Velasquez’s work Untitled Series. Here, a palette of red, green and grey elevates the pure white space. A floating staircase leading to the first floor is laid in beautiful brown Italian marble with brass handrail detail and Indian white marble balustrade.

The parent’s bedroom is modern with an Asian and western theme carefully matching the neoclassic and art deco design. The bedroom features a material palette of bold blue, rustic brown fabric, and polished white plaster wall blending the colours together. The vertical half round detail panel in blue and gold frames the bed in this room with two huge Asian lamps on either side breaking the monotonous nature of the design.

The master bedroom is done in modern art deco. It features a wainscoting in green running throughout the room, above which a custom-made floral black wallpaper has been laid out. While the colour story on the wall lends warmth to the room, the beige of the upholstery and the black and white rug paired with light grey Italian marble floor brings freshness to the room. Other furniture pieces in this room includes a grand four poster bed in black; a corner lounge seating with pastel blue floral sofa flanked by pink chairs on either side.

In the daughter’s bedroom a chic and minimal design awaits with a sage green colour scheme taking centrestage. The room also sees a blend of modernity with neoclassic elements thrown in good measure (like the brass details) to elevate the design. The matte beige finish plaster wall blends with the soft aesthetic of the room right from its pink floral curtains to its subtle green soft panel at the bed back. Details like the black custom low height lamp next to the bed with white marble top side unit adds up to the drama in the room. The minimalistic dressing unit with walnut brown drawers on one corner of the room is another highlight.

In son’s bedroom, the bed is the central focus. The material palette of warm walnut timber, chequered black and white tapestry, black polish, and polished plaster lime green walls make for an elegantly understated interior. The bed has a huge L-shape window for the light to peep in; with glass window on the other side overlooking the basin counter top of the adjoining restroom.

In the modern-classic guest’s bedroom the designers worked with a simple herringbone carving detail in the marble for the bed back. This intriguing design with vertical brass lines makes this room chic and add lightness to the space. To finish the room there is simple bed with bold floral upholstery and light cream side units with brass details. The corner window is highlighted with pastel pink tapestry bringing in more brilliance to the space.
