Set in a beautifully landscaped residential colony in Ludhiana, this residence designed by Art of Space Studio, entailed minor spatial reconfiguration along with interior designing. The design team wanted to craft an environment which would express its resident’s personalities and functionally design areas around their needs and comfort. “When we took on the project, all the structural elements including walls and some parts of ceilings were done,” informs Ayesha Kansal, principal designer, Art of Space Studio. “However, the spatial planning was not optimal and the internal spaces were not utilised well. All the areas of the residence were re-planned — some walls were knocked down, and some were built to provide a more suitable setting for the living and dining areas. Certain windows were also carved out to make the space look larger, and to allow natural light in,” she adds.

For the transformation of a bare bone structure into a welcoming home, Art of Space Studio has focused on the key life principle of connection, to oneself, and to others. All the essential spaces such as the formal and informal living areas, dining, kitchen and bedrooms are designed around a central double-height lobby area. This residence is a contemporary take on the traditional courtyard design.

The interior spaces complement each other through an elegant and harmonious material palette. The lobby design is inspired by the client’s larger-than-life persona and is reflected in the forms and charms of the intimidating yet welcoming design. Here, a curvaceous sofa with its round table and designer chairs make for a gorgeous central lobby setting. The bespoke chandelier featured here is made from hand-carved pieces of Alabaster stone. An interesting juxtaposition of multi-stone wall to the muted sofa textures, a combination of exotic marble and glass tables, hints of antique polished elements and the views to the garden outside make a welcoming formal living room. The double-height dining area with its beautiful customised seascape oil painting (by a local artist) is paired with hanging globe lights and serves as a curious distraction and a topic for conversation.

The bedrooms with their muted furniture selections, warm wood panels, vibrant wall-coverings and dramatic pendant lights, create exciting yet soothing spaces of retreat. The spacious family room provides the perfect setting for everyone to reenergise and enjoy quality family time. All the spaces support sliding door windows that open into landscaped alleys that filter in ample natural light. Most of the furniture and lights have been custom designed for the home, whilst the rest have been acquired from craftspeople across India.
