The brief

This Scandinavian-themed apartment in Bengaluru was designed by WeaverBirds Design Studio for a young working couple and their two children. The brief entailed spaces that were light on the eyes, but had maximum functionality in terms of access and storage. The colour palette had to appeal across all age groups, while not being stark bright and too evidently childish. “Going by the client requirement, the design intent had to be elegant with no compromise to functionality. Maximum storage was the key requirement, with equal importance to free spaces for kid movements. Hence flexible designs with convertible and kid friendly furniture were a priority,” informs Rashmi Soni and Muktha Prabhu, principal architects WeaverBirds Design Studio.

The spatial configuration

The 1,300-square-foot apartment’s entrance allows enough space for a sleek shoe storage, and then opens out into the living-dining space which is well-lit thanks to the compact balcony overlooking the lake. The kitchen is aligned adjacent to the dining space, and is opened up to allow the flow of light and easy visibility through the living area. “As the kitchen was poorly lit and not adequately ventilated, the design team broke the walls here to allow ample light to flow in from the living spaces. This also ensured that the family was well connected while the working parents were taking turns to manage the kitchen and kids together,” says the architects.

The short passages on either side of the kitchen lead to the three bedrooms, two of which are with ensuite toilets and one common toilet easily accessible to the day guests. The study/kids’ bedroom being the smallest is also meant to be used as a play area for the toddler. The space is therefore designed with a foldable bed and kid-friendly furniture.

The design and material details

The apartment has a clean minimalist approach. Here, flexible and multifunctional design is combined with the warm tones of wood, rattan and soft black furniture and lighting pieces; and highlighted through pleasant colour backdrops. With the primary principle to create a warm and cheerful atmosphere with maximum functionality, the balance is brought about by the use of natural textures, colour tones, decor and ambient lighting.

The theme is kept modest with bold light fixtures being used as a focal point and subtle English tones on the backdrop walls. Pastel Scandinavian colour tones adorn the walls and panels highlighting the hints of rattan and fabric incorporated into the furniture designs. The significance of the minimalist wall beading details used to define the colour tones cannot be ignored.
