The site

The project is located in a newly built multi-storey building. The site is a 3 BHK duplex apartment which is used as a weekend house. The apartment has large windows and huge balconies connected to the interior spaces, and the site is surrounded by natural water bodies and greenery.

The brief

As the owners, a young couple, intended to use the space as a weekend home geared towards entertainment, they wanted the home to be cosy and trendy, a place where they could welcome family and friends after busy schedules.

The design intent

“I believe in breaking the boredom of a single contemporary language,” says architect Mayur Kanpariya of Ananta Design Studio. “Here, I mixed the style with traditional elements, vintage furniture pieces and décor, which added character to the space. That’s why we called it ‘A Designed Cocktail’.”

The penthouse was brightened by vast openings and to balance the natural effulgence, the design team used exposed concrete plaster teamed with dark polish for wooden furniture, black mirrors and glass.

The spatial configuration

The lower floor of the penthouse is designated as the common area and comprises the living room along with a semi-open balcony and a bar area with a seating space inside. On the same floor, are an eight- seater dining table and kitchen with a brunch table separating the two and a guest room.  The upper floor houses the master bedroom with an open balcony featuring a Jacuzzi and the children’s bedroom with a pitched roof slab.

The material palette

The interiors are done with dark and rustic materials like exposed concrete plaster, wooden furniture in dark polishes, black glass finishes and statement mirror pieces. A contemporary design is amalgamated with traditional touch by the vintage furniture pieces.

The challenges

The main challenge was to bring several materials together but in a harmonious fashion. “As a creator, to merge two totally different design styles was one of the major challenges, and to maintain the same was quite a learning process for me personally,” says Mayur.
