The site

The Sinha Residence designed by Usine Studio is situated in a gated community on the outskirts of Vadodara. The structure of this 5,600-square-foot house was already constructed, and the design team did not alter it before they started on the interior design.

The brief

When this family of four first visited Usine Studio, they had “floating pieces of ideas” of what they needed in each of their individual spaces. “The signature, sleek, unencumbered language remains intact — enhancing an exuberant environment throughout. Likewise, we have knit tiny concepts together to build the entire narrative of the project,” inform Yatin Kavaiya and Jiten Tosar, principal architects, Usine Studio.

The design and material details

At the entryway one is greeted by the pleasing motif of a banyan tree and sculpture which is complemented by a panelled wall in the foyer area. The formal living room features lavish seating spaces that can be converted to a personal home theatre room when the need arises. The varied sofa arrangements in shades of olive green keeps the space playfully modern. The design team kept the artwork minimal and engaging here. The double-height informal living space is located centrally — it enhances the connectivity of both the floors, and also overlooks the surrounding lawn through the curtain walls. This space extends to the dining space, and has muted toned furniture.

Although the bedrooms have distinct concepts and material palettes, they still communicate beautifully with the rest of the house. The master bedroom is made exquisite with a combination of beige and green in furniture with dash of gold to enhance the richness. The room is flooded with natural light, and also has a lovely view of the garden.

Manifesting the cinematographic profession of the son, his bedroom features hand-painted illuminating graphic walls and dark flooring to create a dappled mood. This simple and elegant room has more open area with only essential furniture pieces.

The walls should have more books than bricks was the daughter’s requirement. Therefore creating a huge library and cosy seating alongside the postal bed was the plan for this room. The ombre wallpaper reflecting illusions and is contrasted with wooden flooring. As the is extended to open terrace, a geometric patterned black and white tile with rustic colour wall was used on the floor to make comfortable seating for this private space.
