THE SITE
Twin House, designed by Discover Patterns, is an apartment situated in a residential neighbourhood in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. It is located on the tenth floor of a housing society surrounded by high-rise apartments.
THE BRIEF
“The brief was to combine a set of mirrored two-bedroom apartments into a single house for a family of six, of which the youngest members are the twin daughters of the clients. Hence the house got its name Twin House. The clients wanted the interiors to be designed in a manner that is functional and uncluttered, with a focus on the essentials,” says Amanjot Singh, principal architect, Discover Patterns.

THE DESIGN INTENT
The main challenge of the house was to break the monotony of the two apartments as after the demolition of the central wall, the house had a long corridor connecting to the bedrooms on both sides of the corridor. To attain the idea of functionality and aesthetics, Twin House is designed with minimalistic design elements with clean lines, simple shapes, and neutral colour palettes. It is designed with the intent to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the kids in the house.

THE VISUAL EXPRESSION
The idea was to create an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and provide a welcoming vibe to the house. To tell the same tale throughout the house, curves were used as a design element in various forms, eliminating sharp edges from the whole house. This was also done to address the client’s concern about creating safer places for kids in the house. “Curves and softened edges in the narrative serve the dual purpose of functionality and aesthetics,” says Singh. “In addition to this, smooth arches and curved edges bring an easy and relaxed vibe to everything from walls to furniture to lighting.”

THE SPATIAL FLOW
The layout of the house is such that the public spaces of the house are planned at the central part and the private spaces at both ends of the house. The space planning is done in a manner that the layout remains flexible and clutter-free, with sleek furniture designs and fabric in earthy tones. Alternate semi-circular arches are used to break the monotony of the corridor and, at the same time, create an element of itself. Vaulted roofs in the living and dining area of the house add more volume and height to the area, marking an experience of entering into a different space. The house is a perfect balance of colours, textures, patterns and materials, coming together to provide warmth and comfort.
