The site

TV Studio Designs and Consultants LLP was tasked with the design of a 1,200-square-foot apartment for a family of three in Ahmedabad. The clients wanted the 4-BHK to be converted into a 2-BHK and handed over a detailed list of requirements that defined their lifestyle and needs. “The clients wanted fashionable interiors, hence the idea was to reflect everyday glamour at home. They wanted their home to be thematic and styled in a way that can showcase rich application of colours, and admiration to wall decor and murals,” explains Vaibhavi Thakkar Desai, principal designer, TV Studio Designs and Consultants LLP.

The design intent

The interior design focused on streamlined shapes, custom materials and sculptural furniture to make a statement. The roaring Art Deco style was the pitch to develop a bold yet minimal interiors.

The civil intervention

This apartment underwent few civil changes to allow natural light into most areas. It was planned such that excessive walls (read rooms) were brought down to create open breathable spaces. The kitchen was extended, while one bedroom was converted into a dressing room and another into an entertainment room. This congenial space now gave an opportunity to play with volumes, surfaces and well-manicured interior elements. This expanse further created warmth and comfortable nooks. After all the changes, the apartment now has a free-flowing living, dining and kitchen, an entertainment room, two bedrooms and a dressing room.

The design and material details

The entrance door sets the mood for the entire residence with art deco elements created with stained glass and wood. The bespoke console in the entryway has geometric shapes with strong colour conceptualisation and bold details. The living area has Georgian windows and a wall that displays a tailor-made POP artwork highlighting art deco details, a re-draft of the famous Le Reve painting by Pablo Picasso, and a carved bracket. The dining area set next to the open kitchen is marked by a bespoke dining table with an imposing carved leg base; and straight-lined dining chairs and bench. To complement this Art Deco table, the art piece on the wall showcases vintage geometrical forms — an attempt to represent the graphical significance of the era.

The transition corridor from the public to the private areas has a wash basin niche (set closer to the dining zone) made from tailor-made biscuit wall tiles, a mirror and vitrified tiles on the floor… each material brings in different dimensions and creates artistic compositions. To enhance the artistic quotient of this humble area, three contemporary artworks by Aneri Shroff (Let’s Hue Design + Art) was introduced on the wall opposite the vanity. In the design of the multi-purpose room, the highlight is a panel which was introduced to hide a beam. The panelling has gentle curves which feature abstract facial expressions which emits exuberant energy into the room. The panel has a form showcasing one-line art inspired from Picasso in the form of a wallpaper.

In the parent’s room a visual derivation of the iconic Spirit of the Wind (or Victorie) by Rene Lalique finds place of pride on the focus wall. In continuation to the linear lines, the idea of highlighting the concept of the wind on the wardrobe surface creates effective visual balance in the room. The master bedroom has minimal flute panels representing clean aerodynamic modern lines and silhouettes with minimal details on its wall. In contrast, the headboard showcases rhythmic lines, breaking it diagonally. A neutral colour mix with bold contrast of cadmium green accentuates the strong language of the space. Adjacent to the bedroom, an access to dressing room has been designed, with a luxuriant island as a challenge to convert a compact room into a dressing space with optimum organisation of the desired requirements.

Focusing on the surfaces: the living and dining area flooring has custom-made ceramic coloured tiles which nudges this open free-flowing space to be more interactive. The walls don soothing whites, stoneware, winter sky, cream pie and garden moss hues (from Asian Paints) forming pleasant backdrops for the colourful art pieces and furniture. The Ombre colour powerpack dado of the kitchen brings in the strong accents of art deco. The doors of the entire apartment narrate provincial style door frame and casing, playing with subtle colours, panels and arch groove.
