The project

Horizon is a 3,500 sq ft sea-facing apartment in Prabhadevi, Mumbai. Conceived as a contemporary minimalist retreat infused with coastal nuance, the project reimagines a conventional urban apartment into a serene, open, and materially expressive home that frames uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea.

The site

The apartment occupies a high floor overlooking Mumbai’s coastline, offering expansive sea views through floor-to-ceiling windows. The interior shell was received as a conventional layout with segregated rooms and limited fluidity, despite abundant natural light and a strong visual connection to the horizon.

The brief

The clients sought a calm, modern home that balanced functionality with aesthetic restraint. The residence needed to celebrate its sea-facing orientation while remaining warm, practical, and subtly luxurious. Seamless transitions between social spaces were essential, with bedrooms designed as quiet personal sanctuaries.

The design intent

The design philosophy centres on contemporary minimalism enriched with coastal undertones. The aim was to establish a visual and emotional dialogue between the interiors and the surrounding seascape through a disciplined neutral base, layered blue accents, and carefully controlled contrasts. Clarity, openness, and material honesty guide the overall language.

The civil intervention

Spatial reconfiguration focused on opening up the internal layout to encourage fluidity between living, dining, and entertainment zones. Walls were streamlined and repositioned to enhance visual continuity, allowing the panoramic horizon to function as an active architectural element rather than a backdrop.

The spatial flow

Upon entry, the home unfolds into an open-plan living-dining-entertainment space anchored by a sculptural bar. Circulation naturally directs the eye toward the sea-facing glazing, reinforcing the horizon as the focal axis. Private bedrooms branch off discreetly, maintaining separation while preserving continuity through a cohesive material palette and controlled silhouettes.

The material palette

Textured grey walls, taupe marble flooring, and black wood and metal accents establish a calm architectural base. Deep blue appears through veneer panelling, artwork, and soft furnishings, echoing the shifting tones of the Arabian Sea.

The bar zone introduces antique brass and black wave marble, creating contrast through material weight and texture. Bedrooms incorporate fluted wall panels, upholstered inserts, and a restrained palette that transitions between blush, taupe, charcoal, and natural wood. Bathrooms maintain clarity through crisp surfaces and subtle vertical detailing that enhances perceived height.

The highlights

The cantilevered antique brass bar counter set against black wave marble forms the visual centrepiece of the residence. Floor-to-ceiling windows dissolve the boundary between architecture and seascape. Carefully curated lighting, including handcrafted pieces, introduces warmth and craft within an otherwise minimalist envelope. The interplay of blues, taupes, and controlled textures reinforces the coastal narrative without overt theming.

The challenges

Balancing expansive ocean views with a strong interior identity required restraint. Achieving openness while retaining storage and functionality demanded careful planning. Maintaining calm minimalism within a dense urban context, without diluting warmth, required disciplined material selection and detailing.

The takeaway

The project affirms the power of restraint—how clarity in layout, discipline in palette, and sensitivity to natural context can produce a home that feels expansive, calm, and quietly expressive.
