The project

The Silhouette House is a 3,875 sq ft residence in Ranchi that explores understated luxury through serenity, tactility and balance. Designed by Metarch Studios, the home is conceived as a sequence of calm, carefully articulated spaces where minimalism is softened by material depth and expressive detailing. Each area is shaped to feel intimate yet open, allowing modern living to unfold with ease and quiet confidence.

The site

Located in the residential neighbourhood of Lalpur, Ranchi, the house sits within a tranquil urban context. Completed in 2025, the project reflects a contemporary interior sensibility that prioritises spatial fluidity, natural light and material harmony. The setting allowed the designers to ground the home in a sense of place while maintaining a refined, modern character.

The brief

The clients sought a home that felt soothing and personal, free from excessive ornamentation. Comfort, warmth and calm sophistication were central to the brief, with an emphasis on creating spaces that feel emotionally resonant as well as functional. The house needed to support everyday living while offering moments of retreat and repose.

The design intent

The design intent was to craft a spatial experience rooted in restraint, where minimalism is softened through texture, proportion and material depth. Rather than relying on bold gestures, the home allows subtle shifts in tone, surface and light to define its character. “We wanted the house to feel calm and grounded, where materials, light and proportion work quietly together rather than compete for attention,” says principal architect Anupam Deb. Each surface and volume is carefully calibrated to strike a balance between simplicity and richness, resulting in interiors that feel composed, tactile and emotionally resonant.

The civil intervention

Interventions were deliberately subtle, focusing on refinement rather than reconstruction. Structural openings were redefined to enhance natural light and visual continuity, while select partitions were realigned to improve proportion between private and shared zones. These measured changes allowed the layout to feel more cohesive and fluid without altering the home’s essential structure.

The spatial flow

The house unfolds gradually, beginning with a sculptural entrance foyer that establishes a calm tone through stone textures, indoor greenery and controlled lighting. From here, the living lounge becomes the central anchor, connecting seamlessly to the family lounge and private bedrooms. Circulation remains open and intuitive, encouraging the free movement of air and light. Bedrooms are conceived as quiet sanctuaries, layered with muted finishes and soft lighting to support rest and privacy, while shared spaces retain openness and visual connection.

The material palette

A muted, cohesive palette defines the home’s character. Brushed stone, warm oak veneers, fluted wall panels and soft fabrics come together to create tactile richness without visual heaviness. In the living lounge, marble textures are paired with oak finishes and upholstered furniture in teal and beige tones, adding warmth within a restrained framework. Bedrooms rely on textural wall treatments, soft greys and fabric headboards to create cocooned comfort. In the foyer and corridors, fluted stone cladding, subtle metal inlays and accent lighting frame transitions between spaces. Every finish is chosen for its ability to evoke warmth, tactility and understated opulence.

The challenges

One of the key challenges was achieving warmth within a largely muted colour palette. Avoiding monotony required precise calibration of textures, tones and lighting. Coordinating joinery details with integrated lighting also demanded close alignment between design intent and on-site execution to ensure visual clarity and seamlessness.

The highlights

The entrance foyer emerges as the visual heart of the home, composed through stone artwork, oak framing and paired lounge chairs that set the tone for what follows. The central living lounge stands out for its balanced proportions, layered finishes and calm lighting that shifts subtly through the day. These moments transform simplicity into sculptural elegance, elevating everyday spaces.

The takeaway

The Silhouette House reinforces the idea that minimalism is not about reduction, but precision. The project underscores the value of restraint in design, where every line, joint and texture must earn its place, resulting in a home that feels composed, tactile and enduring.
