The brief
House of Design Architects, led by architect Ria Joseph Alappat, was invited to design the interiors for J.A.D.E by Alappat, a luxury gold jewellery showroom in Kochi, Kerala. The client wanted a boutique that felt sophisticated and elegant, a space that could present high end gold jewellery with a sense of refined exclusivity. The brief called for elegance without ostentation, and a setting that reflected the brand’s commitment to understated luxury and artisanal craft.
The 1,005 sq ft L-shaped site was originally an open shell, which offered the freedom to imagine the entire experience from the ground up. The context demanded a careful balance. The proportions had to be optimised, yet the space needed moments of grandeur that suited the world of luxury retail. This project became an opportunity to craft a distinct identity for the brand while creating an intimate environment that invites customers to linger and explore.

The design intent
The concept for the showroom draws from the gemstone jade, expressed through a palette of rich English green balanced with soft off white and delicate floral gold accents. The intention was to create an interior that feels timeless and elegant, with gentle contrasts and layered materials that bring depth without overwhelming the compact space. The design bridges heritage and modernity, allowing the boutique to feel both rooted in tradition and aligned with contemporary luxury.
The civil intervention
The civil work was kept minimal, focusing only on changes that could improve movement and create a more inviting flow through the showroom. New arched openings and display niches were introduced to soften the existing geometry and guide visitors naturally from one zone to the next. These interventions helped shape a gentle, curated retail journey without altering the structure unnecessarily.

The spatial configuration
The entrance opens directly to a striking cash counter, framed by the brand’s logo and positioned to set the tone for the experience ahead. The main display area is defined by movable off white units and slender tables paired with floral upholstered chairs, creating a flexible layout that can adapt to changing collections. As the plan turns along the L-shaped layout, the space transitions into a more exclusive selection zone. Here, a round central display table showcases jewellery on elegant display necks, all placed under a grand chandelier. A three-way mirror behind completes the setting and forms the visual and experiential focal point of the showroom.

The colour and material palette
The colour scheme centres on English green paired with soft off white and touches of antique gold. This palette sets a refined backdrop that allows the jewellery to take focus. The flooring is finished in a cement texture, grounding the space and giving the movable display units and tables a clean stage to stand out. The furniture follows the same soft off white tone, with slender tables paired with floral upholstered seating that adds a gentle decorative note. Jewellery display necks in English green and maroon introduce contrast and richness, layered carefully against the walls to highlight each piece. Lighting plays a significant role in shaping the ambience. Multiple chandeliers bring warmth and a sense of occasion, with a statement fixture placed above the central round table. This table, dressed with display necks and backed by a gold accented three-way mirror, anchors the showroom as the primary focal point and expresses the understated luxury that defines the space.

The highlights
The experience begins at the arched carved entrance, painted in English green, which creates a memorable first impression and sets the tone for the boutique. At the heart of the showroom, the central round display table, chandelier and mirrored backdrop come together to form the most striking moment in the space. This ensemble strengthens the luxury narrative and anchors the visual hierarchy. Throughout the showroom, the contrast between deep English green, off white furniture and delicate gold accents defines the brand’s identity with clarity. The use of movable furniture adds an element of flexibility, allowing the layout to adapt to new collections while maintaining a cohesive and elegant setting.

The challenges
“One of the main challenges lay in optimising the compact L-shaped layout while ensuring a clear flow and distinct zones for the retail experience,” shares Ria Joseph Alappat, principal architect, House of Design Architects. “The design also had to balance a sense of opulence with restraint. The interior needed to feel rich and inviting without overshadowing the jewellery, which remained the true highlight of the showroom,” she adds.
