The project

Sanctum of Neutrals is a 1,000 sq ft, 3BHK apartment in Mumbai designed for a couple from Himachal and Baroda beginning life in their first owned home. Drawing from the quiet strength of a neutral palette, the interiors reflect calm clarity through natural materials, layered tactility and a warmth that leaves room for memory to accumulate over time. Emotional comfort takes precedence over excess, shaping a home that nurtures pause, presence and an intimate connection to place.

The site

Originally a builder-finished flat overlooking the podium level, the apartment sits closer to landscaped greens than typical high-rise homes. Each room frames a soft, verdant view, allowing nature to slip gently into the daily rhythm of the home and informing its grounding, inward-facing calm.

The brief

As a first home for the couple, the space needed to carry echoes of their respective hometowns while embracing contemporary sensibilities. The brief sought intimacy, adaptability and visual serenity — a balanced expression of nostalgia and modernity that would remain flexible for the family to layer in personal touches over time.

The design intent

Led by principal architect Resham Doshi of Skulpterra Designs, the home was envisioned as an adaptable refuge where material restraint and thoughtful planning shape a sense of belonging. The intent was to demonstrate how small spaces can feel timeless through clarity, craft and gentle articulation. Every detail resonates with warmth and quiet elegance, forming a sanctuary grounded in emotion and lived experience.

The spatial flow

The layout unfolds in a gentle, intuitive rhythm. An open living and dining area forms the social heart of the home, anchored by a handcrafted swing that encourages conversation and effortless interaction. The dining area extends naturally from the living space, its gallery of artworks and photographs forming a narrative spine that is personal without being overwhelming. Along the periphery, the bedrooms function as private retreats, each calibrated for rest and individual expression. Circulation is minimal and light-led, allowing the compact home to feel expansive, serene and grounded at once.

The material palette

Warm wood finishes, textured walls and muted stone form the home’s earthy foundation. Terrazzo, linen and handcrafted ceramics introduce depth and tactility, enriching the neutral composition with subtle variation. Black accents in lighting, hardware and display units add quiet contrast within the cohesive scheme. The result is a layered yet restrained palette that supports calm living and future personalisation.

The challenges

Working with compact spaces risked creating a sense of confinement. The design response relied on openness, restrained materiality and clean lines to avoid visual clutter. Streamlined furniture, minimal detailing and a consistent palette kept the spaces feeling uncluttered, while layered textures brought depth. Light, proportion and subtle tonal shifts became the primary tools for making the home feel expansive within its modest footprint.

The highlights

The home’s strength lies in its balance between shared connection and personal retreat. The open-plan living and dining spaces foster togetherness, while each bedroom and nook offers a moment of quiet leisure. The handcrafted swing in the living room, paired with an arched low seating by the window, becomes the emotional centerpiece — a soft perch to enjoy daylight, greenery and slow moments. This interplay of openness and intimacy defines the home’s character.

The takeaway

Operating within a defined budget and a tightly framed brief, every decision remained intentional and rooted in the clients’ lifestyle. Designing compact spaces without compromising function became both the challenge and the accomplishment, demonstrating that simplicity, when guided by purpose, can yield timeless warmth and comfort.
