The site

The site that was handed over to Shreya Mago Designs consisted of two individual stand-alone units in a commercial building.

The brief

For her first multi-specialty dental clinic, the client desired a space that would prioritise functionality and use of space, allowing her to provide end-to-end patient care. She envisioned a warm and welcoming environment that would make her patients feel at ease and at home.

The design intent

“Our design intent for the space differed from the typical and sterile look of traditional dental clinics,” enlightens architect Shreya Mago. “Instead, we aimed to create a functional and visually pleasing space that would elevate the experience of visiting the dentist and make it wholesome. Our design focused on generating softness through the use of playful arches and curves, which are in harmony with the material mood board of the space.”

The civil intervention

The design team renovated the commercial space by removing the internal wall that connected two units, creating a large blank canvas. Additionally, besides reconfiguring the main entry, they closed off two bathrooms and built a new personal bathroom and pantry. The result of this exercise was a cohesive entity with a distinct spatial hierarchical progression. “We utilised the window facades for important areas such as the patient-centric rooms,” points out the architect.

The spatial configuration

A spacious reception area that exudes comfort and warmth, provides an ideal space for waiting. The clinic has been thoughtfully designed to create a seamless flow of spaces. Therefore, from the reception, you have a clear view of the entire clinic.

A small window provides a sneak peek into the X-ray room, while the glass doors with signages connect visually to the other spaces, creating an inviting and cohesive atmosphere. A small pantry tucked in the corner of the waiting area.

The doctor’s consultation room is located adjacent to the waiting area, making it easy for patients to access. The room has been designed to keep the doctor in the focal point of the space. The recovery room is situated right next to the doctor’s cabin and has a sliding door that provides flexibility to increase the consultation room, while also allowing the patient to stay connected to the doctor.

Opposite the recovery room is the X-ray room, which is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, ensuring the highest standards of safety and accuracy. An arched passageway leads to the operatory rooms, which prioritise patient comfort. The dental chairs are strategically placed to offer you a clear view of the outside world, while the floor-to-ceiling glass frontage creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The material palette

The clinic was designed with both aesthetics and efficiency in mind. The material palette includes easy-to-maintain surfaces with textures and colours that blend seamlessly to create an inviting environment. Following a contemporary neutral style, the combination of warm shades of oak woods, beige and grey, and black accents create visual interest and subtle contrast. The light grey flooring serves as the base, complemented by a mix of off-white walls to create a clean and inviting look. To enhance the aesthetic appeal of the space, wood storage panels are incorporated to create the perfect base, adding both style and functionality. The green highlight is strategically placed to add warmth and a touch of interest to the overall design.

The challenges

“One of the biggest challenges,” reveals Shreya, “was to create a space that would blend technical requirements with our design scheme. It was important to incorporate all the necessary technical services and state-of-the-art equipment while still optimising the available space and creating a unique and welcoming experience for patients.”

The highlights

The passageway which connects different areas is the focal point of the design. The arched ceiling, wooden grooved panelling, and shades of green adds a bold touch to the space. This corridor is not just a connector but also a source of inspiration, inviting you to explore and discover the beauty of the space.

Favourite aspect of the project

One of the most enjoyable aspects of design for the architect was working with curves. “Curves can add a sense of movement and flow to a space, capturing attention and engaging the senses,” she says. “By combining them with straight lines, we could create interesting visual contrasts that are uncommon in clinic design.”

The takeaway

“The importance of balance is what we learnt from this assignment,” says Shreya. “Whether it’s balancing different colours, textures, or different agencies involved, for the project to be completed on time and successfully it was important to strike a harmonious balance between all elements and agencies.”
