The Zen Residence is a sophisticated multi-generational living space in Gurgaon

Storey Tellers Design Studio have reflected the family’s personalities through spacious, airy, and contemporary interiors.

The site

The apartment — The  Zen Residence, as it is called — is located in AIPL Zen, Gurgaon, India. Storey Tellers Design Studio received the space as a typical residential unit, which was then transformed into a vibrant, functional, and harmonious living environment.

The brief

“The clients — a young couple, their son, and his grandmother — sought a multi-generational home that would embody qualities of joy and warmth,” disclose Komal Rustagi, Tanbeer Kazi and Prakash Srivastava of Storey Tellers Design Studio. “Functionally, they required ample living space while maintaining a sense of cosiness and comfort.”

The design intent

The design philosophy was to create a space that fosters relaxation, socialisation, and the creation of lasting memories. This was achieved through a contemporary design language, natural materials, and strategic spatial planning.

The spatial flow

The completed assignment features a well-defined sequence of spaces, including an inviting foyer, spacious living room, functional dining area, luxurious master bedroom, comfortable grandmother’s bedroom, and versatile kid’s bedroom.

The material palette

The interiors feature a harmonious blend of wood and rattan elements, natural wood tones, woven textures, soft millennial tones, and vibrant pops of colour. Specific finishes include fabric-cladded bed backs, custom-designed wallpapers, and neoclassical moulding patterns.

The challenges

Maximising space in a multi-generational home and incorporating individual personalities while ensuring coherence throughout the space were the challenges in this assignment.

The highlights

The principal architects of the studio vote for the vibrant art gallery wall in the living room; the quirky custom-designed wallpaper in the dining area; the adjustable table top in the master bedroom’s study corner, and the versatile sofa-cum-bed in the kid’s bedroom as the highlights of this assignment.
