The site

Part of a spacious apartment complex in southern Bengaluru, this 4BHK apartment located a little away from the main hubbub of the city provides for a large floor plan and ample amenities. The prime advantage of this house was non-obstructive views from all the windows and balconies, offering views to the beautiful landscape around the apartment complex. “We received the space from the builder with the standard work done by them. The blank canvas helped us re-envision the space with absolute fresh eyes,” says Zameer M, principal architect, ZSP Design Studio.

The brief

Zameer’s client, a nuclear family of four with two young daughters, wanted a mix of contemporary and ethnic elements, with the Indian touch of rattan and walnut wood tone furniture. While the space had to include various points of interest and design elements, it also had to be practical. “Maximum storage in places not part of the common area was a smart approach to make the common spaces look lighter to the eye,” says the architect.

The design intent

The approach was to create an oasis of calm and airiness with touch of traditional and striking design elements whilst integrating the urban needs/functions of a working couple.

The civil intervention

The site needed small tweaks such as changing plumbing lines, construction of walls around the kitchen extending to the other part of the space. Small civil realignments made for seamless installation of custom units.

The highlights

The home weaves in several elements of interest. The breakfast counter is finished with fluted panel details on the outside facade, seamlessly painted in Duco. The fluted window frame detail from the kitchen opening to its extension let light enter the veggie wash area. The Moroccan tile flooring in the extended kitchen elevates its visual impact. A bedroom and its wardrobe are separated by an arch. The sliding door to the dresser has a beautiful wicker detail, while the puja space is accommodated in the vintage unit. These are just a fee among a host of many other details.
