The brief

The villa is located on the outskirts of Hyderabad with breathtaking views of boulders and greenery all around. “We were blessed with a very understanding client who gave us a free hand to design the space,” smile architects Anchal Jain and Adesh Kothari of Crenovate Designers. “The brief was to design a home which was calm and comforting yet one which would make a statement. We married the essence of a true modern home through contemporary furniture with traditional décor and paintings.” Thus, The Tropical Villa, which is how they refer to this home, flaunts beautiful tropical coloured furniture, hand-painted wallpapers and statement decor against a backdrop of clean and minimal walls.

The challenge

The biggest challenge was to establish a connection between the kitchen and dining which were placed far off in the original plan since the entry to the house was from the lower floor. “We interchanged the drawing and dining rooms, and modified the wall between the kitchen and the dining space by creating a window with a teak and fluted-glass sliding partition. This also serves as a breakfast counter,” reveal the designers. The second challenge was the wicker back-wall in the master bedroom — which was successfully executed after a number of mock-ups and site trials.

The material palette

The living room is all about comfort and sophistication with a dusty pink L shaped lounger with brass accents, complementing grey armchairs and an intricate bone inlay coffee table against a white fluted back wall which serves as the perfect canvas.  The dining is the most vibrant space in this home. Presiding over the natural teakwood, brass-inlaid table and wicker chairs is a stunning hand-painted pichwai in turquoise and metallic gold and silver tones. The kitchen is designed in soft tones of pastel green, PU-finished cabinetry and brass-toned hardware. “As the client was not very particular about storage, we took this as an advantage and provided an open wooden shelf with brass accents which makes the kitchen look spacious and clutter free,” declares the duo. Each of the four bedrooms has been designed with a unique character emulating the taste of the end-user. While the master suites are sophisticated and luxurious, the kids and guest bedroom have been kept natural and colourful with the use of beautiful hand-painted wallpapers and bright furniture.

The highlight

“The dining area has to be the highlight of the entire home since it has the advantage of bright natural light all through the day,” opine Anchal and Adesh. “And, of course, there’s the pichwai as well.” The architects also like the kids’ bedroom with its pastel green-toned PU wardrobes with brass accent handles, a sage green bed, beautiful wallpaper and custom-designed brass and ceramic pendant lights.

The takeaway

“The villa took us almost 15 months to furnish since every space is custom-designed piece by piece as per the clients requirement — be it lighting, the rugs or the furniture,” say the designers. “This makes it unique, personalised and functional all at the same time!”
