Design Box was handed over a bare shell of a 3BHK apartment to be converted into a modern and vibrant home for a couple and their son. The stylistic route chosen was modern, minimalist and classy, and the design narrative was expressed using broad modern strokes filled with muted colours and accent walls. With the budget ruling out any civil intervention, the project was successfully delivered in a timeframe of three months. The programme begins with a foyer that flows into a living room with a balcony. The public face of the home is separated from its semi-private zone (comprising the dining-kitchen block) by a glass partition, which formulates a seamless feel. The three bedrooms are tucked discreetly inside.

Wood plays a dominant role in the material selection, with mirror, glass (fluted and back-painted), fabric and metal adding their presence to the visual expressions. “The living room has a green accent wall with a self pattern which creates a colour pop in the otherwise muted grey house without being loud,” elucidates Design Box’s principal architect Swapnil Sharma. Similarly, a mirrored wall in the dining space with a wall-fitted bench visually enhances the compact dining/kitchen area. The use of exposed RCC-finish walls in the master and son’s rooms create a monochromatic look.
“With a well-defined design brief, quick decisions, strong agencies, it’s not difficult to work with a modest budget and yet achieve a good result,” concludes the architect.
