The brief
Project Atulyam is designed by P&D Associates for a three generational family in Bharuch. In this 8,550-square-foot, six bedroom bungalow, the clients wanted free-flowing spaces (with bare minimum hindrance) to enable the kids to play easily, without bumping into any decor element.
The design intent
As per site area and the family’s need for outdoor space, a huge semi-open verandah was created on the ground floor. The open house concept allows fluidity in formal space, which adds to the luxurious feel. Massive artworks around the house emphasis on the grandeur of the space. The overall driving force in this bungalow is its modern approach with mix of neoclassical colour story which makes gives it a unique character.

The exteriors
A pronounced use of concrete, wood and aluminium feature on the exteriors of the house. Slender wooden-finish aluminium sections takes over the projecting facade as a second layer, while exposed concrete is cast using wooden strips, achieving a rough, distinctive texture. Punctured marble stone detailing grace the compound wall cohesively blending with the overall facade.
The interior design and material details
An entrance porch welcomes you with a semi-formal seating space, which further leads to the formal living room with a glass partition. The informal seating area in the living room caters to 10 people. The colour theme here has been kept neutral, with just a massive artwork adjacent to the television, and a modern silver chandelier taking centre stage. A neutral wooden and cane space divider lies behind the soft blue sofa here in attempt to shift the focus from the staircase behind.

The living room and bedroom passage opens into a huge semi-open outdoor space supported by beautifully designed exposed concrete column. The custom made dining table has a black concrete top with brass painted MS support all held together with custom design chair resting on red velvet carpet. A palette of red, green and grey elevates this pure white space.
The parents’ bedroom is a blend of modernity with neoclassic elements thrown in good measure in the form of a brass jaali. The matte grey finish on the accent wall here gives it warmth, while the colour blocks in the upholstery, and the muted pastel rug paired with a light grey Italian marble floor brings subtle freshness. The son’s room is modern but borrows a colour story from the neoclassical era. It is blended with modern upholstery, black and white bedside lamps and a chequered bed-back. In the daughter’s room, the bed is the central focus — a velvet red upholstered bed-back with slender brass rods is paired with green lamps on either side to celebrate this white space.

In one of the two master suites, the bed stands freely (not against a wall) with a sofa on one side. The bed is supported by a wooden corrugated mouldings in a turquoise hue with a brass top matching the contemporary custom-made origami bird brass lighting fixture which hangs over the bed. In the second master suite, the designers played with shades of orange, black and brown. Patterns are introduced through soft furnishings, while handpicked artefacts in black and white brings in softness and beauty. Muted nude toned abstract paintings adds the right amount of drama to this room.
