Welcome, nature!

The spatial re-tailoring of Oak Villa, a 4BHK duplex residence located in the lush green outskirts of Raipur, involved a weaving in of greens and sunlight into the space, creating an abode poised at the intersection of grandeur and a gentle, earth-toned visual palette. The existing living room with a beautiful double height and a dearth of natural light and ventilation, for example, was liberated by enlarging a four-foot window to a 12-foot fenestration featuring circular perforations. “The whole identity and the feel of the space changed,” reveals Khushboo Kakkar, lead architect, BASICS Studio.

The living room, drawing room and dining room are seamlessly connected to each other, but notionally segregated by a row of pivoted panels (between the drawing room and the living room/staircase block) or a series of arches (standing between the drawing room and dining area). Additionally, the open bookcase of the living room adds a visual layer over the contrasting tangerine staircase, creating a visual pause. The circular forms of the living room wall are echoed by the terracotta rings of the filler slab introduced over the pooja courtyard. These catch daylight throughout the year, casting different shadow patterns in every season. The master bedroom as well as the kid’s room are located on the first floor. The former, which takes the aesthetic direction prescribed by Japandi, features a curved wall behind the bed which is painted in a hushed texture and continues to the ceiling. The child’s bedroom is inspired by a sprightly young personality, and is therefore bright, colourful and free. The terrace provides a fitting end to the light and air-filled narrative — a rejuvenating space that embraces twine-wrapped lanterns, traditional Gond art, outdoor furniture, a bar unit and lots of greens!
