Newborn photography is a creative vertical imbued with positive emotions. This became the central design idea for a Surat-based photography studio — designed by The Concept Lab — specialising in capturing special moments of newborns. Envisioned as modern, minimal space, the aesthetic direction embraces both earthy shades and vibrant hues, tied together by the intent of establishing a happy space that would make parents and children comfortable. Designed in a short timeline of 30 days, the compact 500-sq-ft facility comprises a reception area, the studio proper, a director’s cabin, storage area, a changing area and a washroom. “The idea was to keep it very simple and easily changeable as per shoots with all the loose furniture,” says Nirja Choksi, design principal of The Concept Lab.

Articulated using simple, easy-to-maintain materials such as paint for walls, laminate for furniture and wooden flooring, the visual expression is dominated by white for its reflective properties. The arched Victorian-style wood-and-glass entrance welcomes the visitor to a small reception cum waiting area. A half-height wood-framed cane partition, arched again, segregates the latter from the studio. Proceeding further inside, you come to  the director’s cabin with a laminate-covered wall which conceals the entry points to the store room and washroom.

“Except for the problems posed by the second pandemic wave, there were no such challenges,” reveals Nirja. “This project was very easygoing and we enjoyed every part of it.”
