The site
The design team received the 2,600-sq-ft duplex penthouse, located in an upscale western Mumbai suburb, as a completely raw and open structure.
The brief
The clients only requirement for their home experience was to ‘live in a luxury space’. The client detailed their choice for an aesthetic house with modern amenities like a spacious and luxury living area, a modern kitchen and a classy dining area, a home theatre room with loungers and opulent bathrooms with jacuzzi and rain showers.
The design intent
“The philosophy and concept came from the DNA of the client,” disclose Bijal Shah and Rupesh Shah, principals, The Ink Studio Co. “This luxe house is designed keeping in mind the persona and choice of the owner, keeping the movables minimalistic.” The central concept is practical luxury, articulated through sophisticated materiality, furniture both customised and well-known brands, a sense of scale and stunning vistas of the Arabian Sea. While the idea of luxury was paramount the duo also gave a practical bent to their design proposal.

The spatial flow
The first storey has a grand living area, a modern, well-appointed open kitchen and a lavish dining area with the ceiling covered in champagne leaf-work. A beautifully-designed staircase clad with Australian white marble takes you to the lower section which accommodates two master bedroom suites, each with a walk-in wardrobe; a contemporary guest room; and a multi-seat theatre room with soundproof walls and ambient lighting.

The material palette
Rare stones, sensuous linens, tufted upholstered expanses, champagne-leafed ceilings, opulent bathrooms with jacuzzi and rain showers create an expression of opulence laced with pragmatism and comfort. The vast expanse of the living room features Italian marble flooring on which a beautiful well-spaced collection of furniture is arranged. The walls here are lined in a combination of white onyx, Italian marble and Tabu veneer, and a seamless ceiling makes the room feel bigger and modern, bringing in more focus to the furniture. The dining area is outfitted with leather chairs and a striking table custom-made by Rubi Casa (the furniture design arm of The Ink Studio Co.) with an Italian marble tabletop and brass-finish base. The bedrooms, too, feature upscale furnishings such as tufted beds and fine linens.
